    A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

    ––––––––

As a child I had a penchant for all things sweet and was always looking for ways to supplement my pocket money to buy more sweets – let’s just say I was VERY well known to the lovely Indian family who ran the local corner café. I would sew pencil cases, bags, design writing paper sets, and make gemstone ornaments and sell them to friends at school, I would even pick fruit from our garden and sell it to the neighbours – anything to earn extra cash and I was good at it. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was already an entrepreneur.

As I got a bit older, I dreamed of working on the upper floors of a tall shiny building, dressed in my power suit and armed with a briefcase (yes, a briefcase – they were quite the fad back then). So, my journey eventually led me to study Industrial Psychology and I while I was completing my honours degree, I had the opportunity to work for a Corporate Legal Firm which specialized in asset protection, specifically in the event that a business fails. Unbeknownst to me, it was to be the formal start of my journey into business. It was also where I gained my first business mentor and owner of the firm Jose, who not only gave me insight into the work that the firm did surrounding businesses, he afforded me opportunities to grow within the firm starting out as the receptionist, graduating to office manager and eventually his partner in an associated trust administration business. He gave me more responsibility than was probably considered smart on his part, given my young age, business naivety and relative inexperience. However, these opportunities allowed me to learn, grow and make mistakes which led to a sense of self confidence, self-worth and the beginnings of a sound business understanding through actual experience. This coupled with my academic background set a strong foundation for my future and for that I am truly grateful ...and I got to wear those suits and work in a fancy building!

Later on, when it was time to spread my wings, I met and worked with my second business mentor and am happy to say that I still work closely with him today, partnering on many projects. I joined Peter and his ActivPro Business Solutions team and got more directly involved with entrepreneurs and small businesses, specifically writing business plans and mentoring them. I cannot stress enough, the invaluable experience that I have gained over the years, getting to work with people from all walks of life and businesses across all industries facing a variety of different challenges – you cannot learn this stuff in a book! Peter, being a Chartered Accountant and BBBEE Expert opened me up to the more technical side of finance, the BBBEE Codes as well as rekindling my childhood love of entrepreneurship. His patience, enthusiasm and guidance have led me on a massive learning curve over the last ten years, all of which I am able to impart to my own mentees. Through Peter’s assistance, I have also met a variety of industry professionals, all of whom have contributed in some way to my own development and knowledge base.

Last but certainly not least, is my mother (the life mentor) who instilled in me from a young age the value of doing the right thing, working hard and setting out to achieve your dreams. Having sound morals, strong ethics, taking responsibility for one’s actions, honesty, integrity, compassion, the willingness to help others and treating others with respect were key features in our household (amongst countless others). She taught us that no matter what you do in life (even if you sweep the streets) take pride in your work and do it to the best of your abilities. Her unwavering support and insightful advice have made me who I am today and I can only wish that every person has a mother like I do.

The continual learning and guidance from others should never be overlooked or unappreciated, as they are the keys to our success - whatever that may be for each one of us. None of us are products of isolation but rather a collection of lessons and experiences garnered from others. Continue to learn from others and grow, as I do. Learning never ceases but continues throughout our lives - for that, we should be eternally grateful, remember where we came from, and acknowledge those who helped us to get where we are!
