Introduction
What is Reiki? Is it pseudo-science? Is it a religion? Is it a form of meditation? Well, in very simple terms, Reiki is the art of healing. It doesn’t explore a scientific rationale. It has no doctrine. There is no expectation for enlightenment. Those things might become more common as the practice becomes mainstream, but it certainly wasn’t the original intention. On the contrary, the fundamental purpose of Reiki is for one person, a healer, to bring relief and rejuvenation to another.
Reiki is often translated to English to mean life force energy,
referring to the energy that constantly flows within and around us. If this idea automatically triggers skepticism in you, think of the last time you were in a busy city. Unless you have a superhuman ability to tune out the world around you, you were probably struck by the buzz of conversation, the rumble of cars, the vibration of the subway barreling through underground tunnels beneath your feet. All around you was warmth, sensation, noise, energy. For some people, the energy of being a city is exciting and inspiring. For others, it’s overwhelming and unpleasant. But the fact that a city has energy is undeniable.
This life force energy is present in our lives whether we acknowledge it or not. Sometimes, we walk into the break room at work and automatically sense a bad vibe between the coworkers who were arguing about who took the last yogurt in the fridge. We didn’t have to be there for the fight to feel it lingering in the air. Other examples of this energy might be the spark of a first kiss or the warmth between family members hugging at a hospital.
This energy has the power to fill us with motivation, shake us from sleep, soothe our feelings of loneliness. It has the power to warn us of danger or invite us to relax. And we’re not skeptical of this energy. In fact, it’s so fundamental as to be invisible to us most of the time.
What Reiki does, then, is to pay attention to this energy, to channel it for the well-being of the participant. With the help of a trained practitioner, this energy can be used to ease pain as well as promote a feeling of wellness and tranquility.
But even if we can agree that this life force energy exists in our daily lives, why is there still such a hesitancy around Reiki? Even as our society begins to unveil and validate the benefits of other alternative wellness practices, like yoga and meditation, we still have a hard time accepting that Reiki works.
Well, if you picked up this guide, you’re likely intrigued by the idea of Reiki, even though there are plenty of people who doubt the practice. But in my experience, the doubts about Reiki, just like the doubts we’ve had about meditation or acupuncture, come from ignorance more than experience. Those who haven’t tried Reiki or know nothing about it are usually the first to dismiss it. And if you’re just starting to find out about the practice, this can be intimidating. Maybe you’ve been confronted with skeptical comments like, Oh, I didn’t think you were the kind of person that would do Reiki or I just don’t think it’s worth wasting money on that kind of thing. With these kinds of assumptions and misunderstandings floating around, it’s no wonder that so many of us choose not to try Reiki, despite the fact that it can bring so much positivity to our lives.
In order to make you feel more confident in exploring the world of Reiki, this guide is intended to clear up all the confusion and misconceptions around the practice. We’re going to discuss everything about this practice so that you don’t have to feel hesitant or unsure of whether Reiki is the right path for you. By the time you’re finished reading this guide, you’ll know everything from the history, to the scientific findings, to the methodology of Reiki. Once you have this more solid understanding of Reiki, you’ll feel much surer of yourself even when those around you are skeptical of what they don’t understand.
To get started, the first two chapters will talk about the origins of Reiki and the more modern takes on the healing practice. By exploring how the practice came about as well as its potential to change our mental and physical state, you’ll find yourself more open to the practice overall. And an open mind is critical to building and maintaining a steady practice. Chapter Three will prepare you for your first few sessions of Reiki. If you come from a Western background, the idea of trying Reiki might be akin to the feeling of anxiety that would come from traveling to a country where you don’t know the language, so this chapter is intended to help assuage any fear of the unknown.
Chapters Four and Five will invite you to be intentional about setting up a regular Reiki practice so that you can truly reap the benefits. These two sections will help you face any challenges you might face in making Reiki a regular part of your life, from motivation problems to simple boredom. After all, there’s a big difference between trying out a new practice just to see if you like it, and really committing to Reiki as a lifestyle. If you’re one of those people, like many, many of us are, who struggles to stick with a life change, these two chapters will help you think about Reiki as an integral part of your health and wellness plan instead of something you turn to once in a blue moon.
So, only five chapters to explain fairly thoroughly what Reiki is and what it can do for you. Not so intimidating, right? By laying out the practice simply, my hope is that you’ll be able to move forward in your practice without any of the confusion and misconceptions that can make
