"The story is not only a clever coming-of-age tale, but also, crucially, a portrait of humans and animals in productive conversation and coexistence. The boy’s maturation culminates with his becoming a composer (the book includes one page of sheet music for a song titled “1st Invention,” written by Di Paolo). The author’s message is clear: He wishes to promote literal harmony between human and beast.
A moving invitation to heed the voices of readers’ furred, feathered, and finned friends."

2020 IBPA’s Benjamin Franklin Award review for David Di Paolo’s, Animal Spirits in the Millennium. The judges weigh in on the category of poetry...
“The elegant, black cover is both dramatic and delicate simultaneously, and it creates interest.... The book held my interest and presented its message in a clear fashion.”
“This work substantially above most of the rest of the submissions in this year's poetry category in terms of personal interest and readability and will place very highly in the final ranking.”
In his return to poetry, David Di Paolo brilliantly examines the socially-charged topics of our times through a collection of poems, a short story, and music. Animal Spirits navigates through our sometimes volatile and divided existence through the symbolism and wisdom of the animals around us, allowing us to gain insight from their life lessons. With lovely artwork from Dace Kidd, Animal Spirits captures the essence of our humanity, and what the totems from our history can teach us about ourselves.

Animal Spirits in the New Millennium - David Di Paolo
I hear the future,
whispering through the leaves.
I hear the future.
Imminent, impending, inevitable.
From my perch atop the broad oak,
I’ve seen it all before:
the never-ending cycle.
Witness to the follies
of the legged creatures
in the dark forest.
Neither a movement nor injustice escapes
eyes so vigilant,
ears so attuned,
senses so keen.
Ancient,
of eternal lineage.
Wise,
from many winter’s journeys.
Empyreal,
bearer of insight and mystery.
Be the moon
full or new,
blood or blue,
I come,
averring the truth in my wings,
proffering the gift with my talons.
Unfurl your hands,
open your eyes.
The message I share
is pellucid as water.
I know the future,
because it is the past.
Forced to walk the cobbled road alone,
for what sin do you atone?
The transgression of being
Mediator?
Moderator?
You chose neither side,
and so were rejected by both.
But that is the way of the kingdom these days.
You must bend the knee
to one ruler or the other.
A banished prince
whose emblem is Pacifism,
you don’t look back
at the castle
disappearing in the distance.
The stone path gets narrower,
and yet you still meander,
with your unsteady gait,
as if you had downed pints of ale.
In fact, it seems you roam ever wider.
But never fear:
For I am by your side.
I am right by your side.
Atop my shell,
from a deep sea,
emerged the land:
fertile fields,
golden meadows,
and the jagged mountains,
pouring forth streams,
sparkling their way to the ocean.
A ponderous burden to bear—
balancing the world on my back—
but a duty I shall not abandon.
I am protector.
Overseer.
The symmetry consummating
harmony.
The winds will shift,
the tides will change,
but I will be steadfast,
the living rock,
upon whom temples will be built,
and civilizations will rise and fall.
I will be the spirit
outlasting them all.
Eternal youth,
we summon you.
Playful energy,
we revere you.
Dynamic friendships,
we seek you.
Dancing in the waves,
drinking in the sun,
disregarding the shifting shadows
that contract and expand
and then disappear—
you suspend time.
In a never-ending game,
diving in the stream,
chasing your agile brethren,
and feasting on the shore,
you show us the memories we let lapse,
the happiness we did forfeit,
the spontaneity we try to plan.
Joy is your spirit,
boundless is your nature,
inviting is your guise.
Let us rejoice in
