When Wellness Runs Dry Your Return to Self-Care Begins Here - Ashley Jelks-Fragier

    PREFACE

THROUGHOUT MY CAREER, I have encountered several instances and situations that involved teaching adults about self-wellness. Whether it be in the education, psychology, organizational or leadership areas, individuals would approach me with questions and concerns about their self-wellness journey. Many have asked me for guidance with their personal development strategies (educational pursuits, reflection techniques, mindful awareness, etc.), while others were interested in learning how to relieve stress at home and in the workplace. Before I knew it, I was giving life coaching mini lessons seemingly everywhere I went! The demand for this knowledge/assistance grew larger than I could handle (although I absolutely love working with people face-to-face), that it became impossible to keep up with while still trying to maintain my own self-wellness journey.

I was drowning. I had been dealing with several life stressors that included a toxic workplace environment that contributed to physical illness and stress levels that were beyond comprehension. I was handling all major responsibilities alone while helping others plow through their own personal crises – stretched myself too thin and paid the ultimate price. Suddenly, I found myself extremely sad, confused, sick, and functioning on excessive fatigue. Sleep was not happening very often, and healthy self-care was obsolete. Life as I knew it was crumbling around me and I could not get a hold of it. I was sinking... sinking...

How could this be? With all this knowledge and experience, I was not taking my own advice! I was eating horribly, not exercising, and not getting enough rest to function at my highest level. Something needed to change and that was ME. I needed to take my own advice and turn inward for help. I began to research (the student and educator in me) and apply my own self-wellness treatment plan in my own life.

Building my self-wellness treatment plan was based upon the most recommended self-care strategies I could find. I even soaked in a mud-like substance for over an hour because it was recommended (yes this really did happen – it was horrible). From make-up and cleansers to intermittent fasting – I tried and failed repeatedly; until one day – I was done. I simply could not focus on trying anymore. I gave up and became lonelier and more depressed. I had grown tired of, you should try this, you should try that, and the famous, it only takes this [insert whatever product here]. Stress took over every facet of my being and the spiral continued. Before I knew it, I was suffering from The Self-Care Burnout.

You will notice that throughout this book I use the terms we and us a lot. I wrote this book as a partnership with you, to continue my own self-wellness journey. Everything has not been perfect, and I have failed many times. To be honest, even with all the knowledge that I have acquired over the years, I still mess up. There are days where I feel like I’m being unhealthy in my choices. There are other days where I feel so defeated and stressed out that I just hide in my safe place and cry until my eyes hurt and tears dry on my face.

Then something amazing happens... I go back to my self-wellness treatment plan I made and renew my agenda. I start over. Every day we wake up, we can live our lives as if it were our first. We can change the way we think and handle life’s challenges. We can start over. Yesterday does not have to be today,
