Jo Carey

Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

    Dry Spell - Jo Carey

    PROLOGUE

    Three years ago...

You need to leave Caltonia, Lucy said. If the rumors are true and Dad knows we’ve been dating, he’ll banish you or worse.

I’m not leaving you, Madoc said.  Come with me. Let’s runaway together. We’ll go somewhere we can start over and build a life together.

I want a happily ever after with you, but it won’t be easy to find someplace out of his reach.

Every idea he suggested, she overruled. Lucy’s father was known to most people as Zero Slim, head of one of Caltonia’s top crime families. He was ruthless and would not be happy to find out his daughter was dating someone who ran a legitimate business.

Lay low for a few days. I know someone who might be able to help.

Lucy kissed him and left. She took a long, convoluted route home.

There was a knock on the back door, a couple of minutes later.

    What did you forg...

Instead of facing Lucy, he found himself face-to-face with two of Zero Slim’s men.

    XXX

Sorry about all this, Rose said as she set the tray on the table in his quarters. Are you feeling better?

Sure. Great, he said. Where the plurp am I?

I’m Rose Ivey. Lucy is my half-sister. You’re on the CSS Nurlene.

After a few sips of strong coffee, he remembered Slim’s men coming to his door after Lucy left. They must have taken him.

Where are we headed? he asked.

    That depends on you.

Rose explained the plan that she and Lucy had come up with to get him away from Zero Slim but make sure Lucy could meet up with him at some point in the future. Caltonan scout ships were small. The crew of this one had only a pilot and co-pilot and Rose. Lucy’s boyfriend was the only passenger/prisoner on this run.

We’ll go over the plan a few more times when your head is clearer, she said.  Get some rest. We should have a few days.

Madoc was kept locked in his quarters. Rose reviewed the plan with him each time she delivered him a meal.

He had no idea if he could trust her or not. Lucy had never mentioned a half-sister, but if he got the chance to escape captivity, he wanted to be ready to take advantage of the opportunity.

Wake up. It’s time, Rose said.

You should have waited until I was awake, he said.

Sorry. We need to change course in the next 30 minutes. You need coffee?

He drained the cup she brought him and followed her down the corridor. She motioned him to a stop outside the door to the Bridge. She handed him a weapon and started a countdown on her fingers.

On one, she placed her hand on the pad beside the door and the door slid open.  Before Rose could get a shot off, the first officer fired a slug thrower that grazed Madoc’s shoulder. Madoc rushed the guy and during the ensuing melee, a bullet hit the Navcomp. The ship lurched as they dropped out of FTL

Alarms and klaxons sounded and a voice from the speakers said, Navcomp has been damaged. Course altered without authorization. FTL use restricted.

We’re going to crash. Change course now to these coordinates, Rose said, handing a card to the captain.

He programmed the location into the console but stopped before hitting the button that would activate the new course.

If you go back to Caltonia, Zero Slim will kill you. He doesn’t believe in failure, she said. I should know. I’m his daughter.

A blue green orb was growing larger quickly in the front window. Crash imminent, the mechanical voice said. Assume the position. Brace yourselves.

Rose sat down at the comm station and sent a private, encoded message to her half-sister back on Caltonia.

Help me land this plurpin ship, Rose said to the captain, as Madoc held the second officer in a head lock.

Captain, I don’t want to die, the man whose head was being crushed by Madoc’s arms said. Slim won’t find us here.

The ship crashed into a hillside, embedding itself so that only a portion of it was visible.

Where the plurp are we? Rose asked when she woke up with one leg thrown over the captain’s body. She moaned as she stood up and looked out the front window.  What the plurp is the Sleep Tight Motel?

    CHAPTER ONE

I can't believe I'm about to meet a real live Zed Elfa. I mean I know you told me about them, but you've met so many species. The Zed Elfa are like the space bugs from our movies and books, and they're real.

Klym always found Nancy's childlike enthusiasm appealing. They should be honored to meet you. You look very nice, Klym said, Wait. Is that a new medal? The one with the pale blue ribbon?

Klym and Nancy were both wearing the dress uniforms of the Earth Galactic Council. Both of them sported colorful medals on the left-side of their jackets with Klym having several more than Nancy.

Yes, Klym. You have one just like it, she said. There's just no room left on your jacket. You look very handsome.

As Earth's interspecies mediation specialist, Klym had welcomed several species to the base on the far side of Earth's moon. Being a Besa Preenian himself, Klym had met hundreds of species when he worked for the
