    INTRODUCTION

The origin and history of the Mediterranean diet

The Mediterranean diet has quite gain a lot of popular all over the world starting from the 1960s with the examination that there are few coronary heart disease related deaths in Mediterranean countries, such as Greece morocco, Spain and Italy, than in the U.S. and northern Europe. The Mediterranean diet has been in existence for more than three thousand years and certainly the oldest diet in the world.

Mediterranean diet is formed with a combination of two words, med and diet.

Mediterranean: is the sea between Asia, Europe and African with a single natural entry from the west towards the Atlantic and an artificial exit towards the red sea east side. The origin of the name is from a Latin word Mare Mediterranean, which is translated the sea in between two continents.

The Mediterranean diet was established as a traditional healthy eating lifestyle of the people of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, a region that has olive trees grown in large quantity, fruits were in season and fish is part of their diet because fishing is done as an occupation by most. Lastly the herbs were used for medical purpose and not just for cooking alone.

Diet: The word diet comes from the ancient Greek word Diaita, meaning a way of life. The word diaita is not meant for the purpose of dietary restriction or people’s habit, but relating to our whole essence of life, activities, work, sleep, companions, place of living and social environments.

Have this in mind, when you are following a Mediterranean diet, you embrace a healthy lifestyle, a way of living, and not just a means of losing weight, but an eating habit that will set you on the right track of healthy benefits.
