      Introduction

      It is not uncommon knowledge to people within and outside the medical field that medical terminology can be really problematic, especially for beginners. This stems largely from their distinctness in pronunciation and character length, which mark them apart from regular everyday words.

      Medical terminology, as the name rightly denotes, refers to the terms in this case, words or phrases, used to conceptualize phenomena peculiar to the field of medicine. These phenomena range from organisms to diseases, to situations to conditions, to emergency procedures to administrations to equipment and their corresponding uses, amongst others. Simply put, it is the diction around which communication revolves around and is made effective in the medical world. In essence, the language of medicine.

      These terminologies are essential to every medical practitioner, as they are the tools for which he or she is able to discern, understand, and report the medical issue. Hence, there arises a need why it should be learnt, understood, and above all, appreciated.

      In this vein this book comes in handy. This is a handbook carefully crafted to serve the purpose of easing the learner through the rigors and inhibitions posed by first time learning of medical terminologies. Since it is imperative of anyone indulging in any medical field to learn the medical terminologies unique to the field, this handbook is pivotal in helping learners find their feet easily, and quickly too.

      This alleviates the learner from being overwhelmed by the learning processes of these medical terminologies, helping them easily assimilate and inculcate them in their diction overtime.

      Concluding, this book is for people who are currently studying the medical field or who are already working in the medical field and want an easy way to learn medical terminologies. The idea is to equip the learner with the basic concepts of these medical terminologies and offer them an in-depth knowledge for better performances in their jobs or school work. This book offers these teachings in an easy and convenient way for the learner.

      Chapter 1

      Why Learn Medical Terminologies?

      Before considering the reasons why the learning of medical terminologies is important to a medical practitioner or student, an in-depth knowledge of the term is worth considering.

      Medical terminologies refer to the language of communication in the medical field used to accurately portray phenomena peculiar to the human body. These phenomena are inclusive but not limited to internal and external processes, parts, conditions, and the measures the human body is subjected to. Simply put, medical terminology is an organized system of vocabulary in the field of medicine. This vocabulary is used to interpret certain conditions, procedures, ailments, et al as distinct concepts in medicine.

      As with other common vocabularies, medical terminologies stem from root words, prefixes and suffixes combined to describe a particular concept. And although these many different prefixes, root words and suffixes have distinct meanings in themselves, their individual meanings are not entirely lost in the morphology of the resulting medical terminologies.

      Whilst the above argument might prove a little too overwhelming in trying to understand medical terminologies, what with the diversity of their lexical structures, it is imperative to note that a willingness to learn and open-mindedness are key to this learning process. Hence, learners should not be deterred by the nature of medical terminologies because a simple approach to understanding them lay in these constituent structures — prefixes, suffixes, and root words. A further study of the morphology of medical terminologies is delved into in concurrent chapters.

      A good knowledge of medical terminologies is important in determining the performance of learners or practitioners of the varying disciplines of medicine in work and study. This is because, regardless of their positions, be it within or outside contact with medical cases, knowledge of medical terminologies is required to allow for easy flow of work and quell inhibitions. In essence, for the tasks of billing, reading, writing, understanding amongst others, to be fully effective and gone about without restraint, the system of communication must be homogeneous and used by everyone within the field of work.

      However, the usefulness of medical terminologies is by no means inclined to learners and practitioners alike, but to patients too. Since patients are rather reliant on the information conveyed in medical terminologies, a proper interpretation and understanding of details is pivotal to their overall health and wellbeing. As such, there is little to no room for mistakes which might prove rather costly.

      It is therefore deducible from this account that medical terminology aids medical procedures and makes medical personnel effective in their duties towards the betterment of the health of patients.

      Furthermore, having considered the concept of medical terminologies, cognizance can now be taken of the individual importance of its study. The learning of medical terminology is important for the following reasons:

      1.  For Effective Communication:

      Communication forms the bane for which the study and practice of medicine stems from, and is made effective to any sense. This also applies for every other such field. For without it, nothing can indeed be expressed or understood, and little to nothing can be ever accomplished. It is thus from this vein that medical terminologies owe its relative importance on account of its role in aiding communication in the medical field.

      But whilst communication is in itself not limited to any particular means of self-expression, for proper communication to be effective in any medical field, medical terminologies must be employed.

      This arises from the reason that as much as any other language might suffice to express any medical phenomenon as fluently as possible, medical terminologies rather capture the entirety of the phenomenon. This is because medical terminologies are sourced from the medical issue. In this regard, medical terminologies better portray these medical phenomenon’s, their possible causes, subsequent measures to be taken, and the varying stages there might be to the medical issue. This explains why they offer better interpretations and understanding of the phenomena, as they literally form the basis of its conception.

      Hence, medical terminologies offer a standard pathway for medical practitioners and students to effectively communicate and ensure a total understanding of any medically based incident.

      2.  In Aiding Better, In-depth Understanding

      With the formation of effective communication now in place, medical terminologies offer a better understanding of any medical phenomena.

      It cannot be understated that their morphology literally originates from root words, suffixes and prefixes peculiar to the many different medical phenomena. They largely bear unmatched details of these phenomena. As such, only these medical terminologies can truly convey an in-depth insight of these phenomena without leaving the slightest detail to chance.

      It is for this reason they are arguably most important. This arises because in cases demanding much attention to detail, being learned in medical terminologies proves most useful. Hence, it curbs the rise of contingencies ineffective, undetailed communication in other diction, or total ignorance may give rise to. Thus, saving both practitioner, students, and, patients the cost of blunders.

      Furthermore, in helping a medical student or practitioner attain a perfect understanding of medical phenomena, learning medical terminologies also facilitates the decryption of composite knowledge. As such, it not only helps the learner understand the basis of medical phenomena, but also helps him or her to identify any such phenomena. This is because, when total understanding is established, everyone involved in the running of things will have no cause for delay since an understanding of the phenomena isn't at all alien to them. Subsequently, it results in smooth proceedings devoid of hindrances.

      3.  In Facilitating the Employment of Health Plans and Trainings:

      Learning medical terminology is important to any practitioner who constantly seeks to better him or herself by constantly indulging in training. The same is applicable to students or medical personnel who have to undergo training and workshops during the course of studying or working within the medical field.

      This arises from the reason that an understanding of medical terminologies fosters better grasping of the language of communication and its corresponding meanings during these trainings, seminars or workshops. Some of types of training may include HIPAA compliance training which is fundamental to every facet of medical practice, or Control training issued by a particular medical institute amongst others.

      Since these trainings are geared towards creating a healthy environment for both medical staff and patients, a good command of medical terminologies proves vital to this end.

      4.  Inaccuracy of Diagnoses:

      Medical terminologies , when learnt and understood, help medical practitioners better understand the conditions of patients for better, more accurate diagnoses of these issues.

      Since medical personnel come across many cases whilst doing their duties, there is often need for quickness in writing reports, patient cards, and so on. Subsequently, this medical information is written in abbreviations — coded medical terminologies — and a total ignorance or partial understanding of medical terminologies might prove fatal when dealing with this written information. This stems from the fact that little to nothing would be conceived of the complex information contained in the patient's card or report, thereby causing a delay in diagnosis and treatment. And whilst these delays might sometimes not be fatal outrightly, no chance should be taken upon a patient's life.
