Life's Rich Tapestry

About this ebook
Life’s rich tapestry is beautifully woven together in this anthology of original short stories and poems from new and emerging writers. By exploring a variety of themes, the reader is taken on a journey of highs, lows and thoughtful reflection with pieces of writing that incorporate humour, pathos, adventure, fantasy and hope.
This 30th Anniversary Anthology brings together contributions from The Writers Bureau’s students and alumni. As well as a celebration and showcase of student’s work The Writers Bureau hopes that the collection will be an inspiration for readers to take up the pen themselves.

Life's Rich Tapestry - Writers Bureau
Thank you to all the students who entered the competition to be selected for this anthology. Without all these entries and those selected we wouldn’t have a book to publish to celebrate our 30 years helping writers. Also, thank you to Diana Nadin, our Director of Studies, for her massive contribution to editing and proofreading this publication.
Forward
I am delighted to be introducing this celebratory anthology. All the contributions are from The Writers Bureau’s student body from down the years. Students were asked to send in their poems and short stories, on any theme, from which we selected 15 of each. The overall winner in each category is featured first.
Not only are we celebrating our birthday, we’re also celebrating all our students who pursue their writing with energy, enthusiasm and courage. Without them we’d be nothing.
It’s been a pleasure compiling this publication. By reading and re-reading the contributions we’ve become familiar with each piece of work and, just like spending time with people, each piece goes from a mere acquaintance to a loved friend. There is a real mix of themes but hopefully you’ll find something amongst them that chimes with you. We’ve ordered the pieces to give you an insight into life’s rich tapestry – there’s humour, pathos, murder, adventure and hope, which is where we finish.
I hope you’ll enjoy reading all the poems and stories and that you’ll be inspired to put fingers to keyboard yourself.

Portrait
By Peter Jackson
Who is that man upon the stair
Who looks with supercilious air
Upon our world as if he knows
That his was better? Why that pose,
Aloof, untouched by scorn or hate,
And yet not quite dispassionate –
And did I really see him raise
One eyebrow and with wistful gaze
Take in all that has happened since
His sad demise, and did he wince?
Now retired and in his early seventies, Peter is a former commercial property lawyer who enrolled with The Writers Bureau more than ten years ago. He hasn’t yet published any poetry apart from the odd unpaid snippet online, but enjoys writing it. He has also written the occasional short story and belongs to a local amateur dramatics group.

Big Freeze
By Amber Phillips
The snow seemed to drape delicately across the flower beds in their front garden, unlike the yellowing stuff beyond the gate. The slush formed rough peaks on the pavement and Clarissa could make out the beginnings of track marks across the road from the house, where one of the neighbours had tried to drive and thought better of it. The smattering of cars that ran the length of Limehouse Grove, including her father’s Ford Cortina, lay in a state of frosty paralysis.
It certainly wasn’t the sort of day to be playing hide and seek, but needs must. Thankfully, you couldn’t hear the arguing from
