    Dilton cringed at the complex curves of the barrier symbol. After a deep breath, he took a fresh block of wood and began again to carve the first part of the symbol - but his attempt at a circle resembled a lopsided teardrop. What a pathetic apprentice mage he was!

    He dropped his hand away from the unfinished carving - how could he carve the sinuous shape of the Tree of Life and Death when he couldn’t even carve a circle?

    His heart pushed him forward. I can do this. I’ve mastered hand signs. Master Soyal believes in me. Those last two tests were just flukes. I won’t fail this time.

    Or as Sharalle put it: Stop whining.

    Dilton pushed his scraggly hair away from his eyes and fumbled with his clean robe. Sharalle differed from other demons - no blood-lust, no murderous intent, just a streak of mischief.
