Chapter 1: Understanding the Function of Insulin in the Body
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that plays an instrumental and vital role in both human and animal metabolism. While it has other purposes as well, when it comes to metabolism, insulin controls the ability of cells to absorb glucose from the blood. This action regulates the blood sugar levels and in a person without type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance, this ensures that the level of glucose in the blood does not rise too high or fall too low. In order to better understand the function of insulin on the metabolism and how insulin resistance and diabetes can interfere with that function, a brief look into the metabolism is warranted. This will not be a deep dive into the science, just an easy to understand overview designed to give you the information that you will need in order to reverse insulin resistance and even diabetes.
How Humans Regularly Metabolize Food
The human body is a machine, much like the engine of a car. A car’s engine powers the systems of the car that allow it to work. The human body is made of billions of cells that perform their specific purpose in order for the machine of man or woman to perform the background functions of life such as breathing, blood circulation, and neurons firing in the brain, as well as those functions under our control like movement. In order for a car to function, it needs fuel, internal combustion engines need gas, while electric cars need energy. The human body is no different and its cells get their fuel from the food that we eat namely carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and alcohol.
The human body can use any combination of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, and alcohol as fuel, but all organisms on the planet prefer glucose as fuel and human cells are no different. All of the cells of the body can run on glucose and it is their default fuel. Most carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and this moves directly into the bloodstream to be used by the cells as fuel. Some carbohydrates such as fructose have to be metabolized through the liver into glycogen which is then stored in the liver, as well as a small amount in the muscles to act as emergency fuel.
When the body ingests protein, it first converts the proteins into their component amino acids and then further metabolizes them into amino acids that can then be used to build up muscles or converted into glucose to be used as fuel. Fats are broken down in the stomach and absorbed in the small intestines. These broken down fats are then converted into energy for the muscle cells or stored in the antipode or fat cells for use later.
The human body lacks a mechanism for storing excess glucose for later use so any excess in glucose gets converted into fatty acids for storage
