      The expression 'grotto' is not only an artistic expression of Buddhist culture, but it also contains the desires of the people who lived in that era. What did the craftsmen of thousands of years ago place on these statues? Is the smile of the Buddha of Lucerna a compliment to the great changes that have taken place over the millennia?

      According to the introduction, the Longmen Stone Cave is located at the south of Luoyang City, which was excavated in Taihe, North Wei, for 17 years (493 AD). After more than 400 years of construction in the East Wei, West Wei, North Qi, Sui, Tang and Song dynasties, there are 2345 altars, over 100,000 statues, 2840 stone inscriptions and 60 pagodas, which are regarded as the model of the world classical art. It was included in the United Nations World Cultural Heritage List in 2000. One day, two days wouldn't be enough for one to carefully read through all these orderly and exquisite Buddha statues!

      Brief Introduction of Longmen Grottoes and Main Caves

      Longmen Grottoes is about 1 km long in the north and south, there are more than 1,300 caves, 2345 niches, more than 3,600 inscriptions and inscriptions, more than 50 pagodas and 97,000 Buddha statues. Among them, the most representative are the Guyang Cave, Binyang Cave, Lotus Cave, Medicinal Cave and the Tang Dynasty's Hidden Creek Temple, Seiji Temple, Wanfu Cave, Fengxian Temple, Wanwu Buddha Cave, etc. The caves excavated by the North Wei were all concentrated in the West Mountain, while the caves excavated by the Tang Dynasty were scattered in the West Mountain and the East Mountain.

      Fengxian Temple

      The original name of the place was the Great Lucerne Elephant Cave, 35 meters in the north and 35 meters in the south, 39 meters in the east and 9 meters in the west. It was the largest and most representative open-air Buddhist shrine in the Longmen Stone Cave, which was excavated during the Wu Zetian era of the Tang Dynasty and took four years. This cave is the most typical Tang cave, showing the high achievement of the sculpture art of ShengTang. The 17.14 metre tall main Flushenavo sat upright in the center of the cave, dignified and magnanimous, simple and honest, bearing all exuded the calmness and magnanimity of Tang Dynasty. The statues in the entire cave were a perfect art form, whether it was the Buddha or the disciples' statues, Bodhisattvas, King of Heavens, or Hercules, they were all vivid and lifelike. Vajra is a rare treasure, rough shape, bold and powerful, its imposing aura is unforgettable.

      Three Caves of Binyang

      It includes three caves: the south cave, the middle cave and the north cave, which are the most typical of the three caves in Longmen's grotto. The central cave of Bingyang is the crown of three caves, it has been 24 years and more than 800,000 years of work. The entire cave is complete and magnificent, while the main statue of Buddha, Buddha, sits on the wall and has two Bodhisattvas, two disciples and two Bodhisattvas, with one Bodhisattva and two Bodhisattvas standing on the north and south walls. Buddha and Bodhisattva are slender in stature, mild in expression and lively in spirit. They have obvious traces of art in the Western Regions and are the typical representative of the elegant bones and light images of the later period of the Northern Wei Dynasty. On the ground, the lotus flower pattern decorates, indicating the lotus pond, and the immortal fairy carved on the ceiling of the cave is also very soul-stirring. The South Cave of Binyang was excavated by the Northern Wei and completed by the Sui Dynasty. Chief Buddha Amitabha face rich, thick lips, natural, smooth lines. Renovation of the statue of Northern Wei Jian Zhuang Xianwei, the lower Tang Dynasty lively, belonging to the excessive period of style. The Northern Cave of Binyang was started in the Northern Wei Dynasty and completed in the first year of Tang Dynasty. The dragon head column foundation on both sides of the hole is the same style as the pillar foundation excavated from Sima Jinlong's tomb in Datong North Wei. It is a work completed by the Northern Wei.

      Gu Yang Cave

      The natural cave is the earliest and most abundant cave in Longmen's grotto. It is also the most complete one preserved at the southern end of Longmen's Western Mountain. The main Buddha in the cave had a delicate image, while the two Bodhisattvas on the left and right were quiet and solemn. The alcoves on the walls of the south and north of the city were mostly constructed with the wishful thinking of the generals of the Xiao Wen Emperor during his campaign. In addition to the carving of the shrine, the fine objects in the cave included a set of relief paintings and an inscription. The set of relief paintings detailed the legendary stories of Shakamuni, and the inscription of the names, dates, and reasons of the sculptors was a valuable material for the study of the calligraphy of the North Wei and the art of carving. The most representative of the calligraphy of the Wei was the Dragon Gate 20, which was found in the Gouyang Cave (another in the Fragrance Cave), and especially the Shi Ping Gong Ji on the north wall, which created the style of the Northern Wei, which was the first treasure of the Dragon Gate 20. To calligraphy lovers, this place was definitely a treasure trove of nostalgia.

      Wanfu Cave

      A hole in the south side of Bingyang Cave was named for its fifteen thousand small Buddhist statues. Entering the cave was like entering the world of Buddha, many of the statues were only an inch or a few centimeters tall. On the south wall, there was a painting of Guan Yin. It had a round face, a full body, a slight twist of the body, and beautiful curves. It was both reserved and dignified, and was the best in the construction of the Longmen statue.

      Best time to travel

      Shennongjia's traffic is dominated by highways.
