      Introduction

      People need information to function – and often they need it immediately. News is vital to our lives to stay informed, to function in society, and to avoid problems. A weather report, a traffic alert, an in-depth article can change our lives – and preserve them.

      In fictional settings, news is important as well. The flow of information is as important as your fantastic politics, imaginative technology, and everyday lives of fictional characters. In fact, like our lives, it’s inseparable.

      This book is about exploring how people stay informed in your fictional settings – or become uninformed.

      How did this come about? Many years ago, I published a column series on worldbuilding called Way With Worlds, taking what I'd learned from writing, gaming, and coaching people. Years later, I revived and rewrote it, including knowledge I'd gained from various projects and experiences. It became a book series after that rewrite because I wanted to preserve it in a more accessible form.

      As I worked on those books, I realized that people may need very specific coaching on various subjects. I decided to create a book that would be like sitting down with me to get help, asking questions designed to help you find your own answers. This way, you get an easy-to-use, in-depth guide on the subject you need
