Murderers are not monsters, they’re men. And that’s the most frightening thing about them.
—Alice Sebold
IN A WORLD OF BILLIONS of humans, all so naturally different and brought up in distinct cultures, belief systems and communities, it is no surprise that our planet is equally capable of producing as many of the most wonderful heroes as the most disgusting monsters.
We are a curious race, one that seeks day by day to uncover the mysteries of our world and our universe; we are the only known species that can attest to possessing a consciousness and advanced intelligence. For some, that intelligence is used for seeking answers and finding a way to progress as human beings.
Others, however, allow it to develop into a tool for finding the best way to indulge themselves in pleasure and give free rein to their desires. These are the most dangerous kinds of humans.
The following book is a compilation of the lives of several human beings who gave themselves up to their fantasies—fantasies born of violence, murder, and the thirst for blood.
Some worked alone, others with accomplices; some were strong and fearless, others used discreet or cowardly methods to kill their victims. Some even did it because they loved seeing the despair in their victims’ faces, while others believed they were fulfilling an order from higher powers. The method matters little, for at the end of the day, they were all murderers of the worst kind.
This collection of stories takes you across the world and into the minds of very twisted individuals. You must understand that no details are left out to protect the readers’ sensibilities.
From Robert Pickton—killing dozens of women and feeding them to the pigs on his farm—to Genene Jones, making children terribly sick and then disturbingly attempting to rise as a heroine to save them, while killing many in the process.
Within these pages, embark on a journey that leads down a bloodstained slope into an abyss of pitch-black darkness.
Chapter One
The Pig Farmer Killer
Canada: the Great White North,
a land of peace and nature. A country which stands with open doors, welcoming those who wish to enter it and better not only themselves, but the nation, in their work and studies.
While home to many wonderful people, it is, just like any other nation, not without its rotten apples. Robert Pickton, was one such rotten apple—a misfit born and raised in the suburban lands of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia—a farmer with little more to care about than his land and the animals living on it.
Nevertheless, this simple man would grow up to become a monster that took the lives of dozens of women and felt no remorse at having done so, as per his confession to a police officer.
Now, let us begin our compilation.
A Simple Farmer
Port Coquitlam is a small, suburban city east of Vancouver, a pleasant place sitting at the confluence of two rivers: the Pitt and the Fraser. Although in recent years its economy has evolved and diversified to include a large amount of industrial and commercial investments, such as metal fabrication, transportation, and high-technology development, it was once a city known for its extensive farmland. Because of its proximity to Vancouver, the farmers in the small city had the right amount of customers to deliver their produce to and were highly successful with their fertile lands, allowing them to leave a substantial inheritance to their heirs.
This was precisely the case with the Picktons. In 1905, 52 years after the first settlers arrived at the area which would become Port Coquitlam, William Pickton, our killer’s great-grandfather, bought a piece of land and began to raise hogs. He dedicated his entire life to this business, soon passing it on to his sons and daughters, and their children as well. Leonard Pickton, Robert’s father, received an inheritance from William and was able to buy a piece of land near a swamp in 1963, where the killings would take place many years later.
At first, however, Robert and his brother, David, worked on their land with their parents. Their sister, Linda, was raised a city girl in Vancouver, but she was close to her siblings. Robert and David grew up learning everything they needed to know about raising and slaughtering hogs, and soon they became a successful partnership. Incredibly successful, in fact. The farmland, purchased for $18,000 in 1963, was valued at $300,000 in 1993. One year later, its value soared to an incredible $7.2 million. The Picktons had started off with a pig farm and now owned a hog empire.
It didn’t take long for others to see viable uses for the Picktons valuable land, and offers began to arrive: in 1994 and 1995, the Pickton brothers sold three large pieces of the farm, each over a million dollars, bringing their total to 5.2 million. Rob and David weren’t just farmers anymore, they were millionaires.
Robert was described as a quiet guy, for which it was hard to communicate with, or to engage with in casual conversations. He behaved strangely and had a penchant for acting tough, as if he owned the place. A local bartender considered him a weasel and a wannabe, despite the rough look he attempted to transmit, and he was perceived as a loner.
Loner or not, Robert and his brother soon became celebrities in Port Coquitlam, investing part of their fortune in a new property nearby. In 1996, they opened a party hall named Piggy’s Palace.
