"Adam is a shining star. He is one of those truly gifted teachers that students love. Adam's passion for teaching and for the content of his subject are inspiring. Recently, I observed a 90-minute social studies lesson in his classroom. The lesson was flawless from beginning to end. Adam's lesson reflected his knowledge of best teaching practices. He captured students' interest, used a variety of instructional strategies, and checked for understanding throughout the lesson. Adam is a gift to the teaching profession. He is a 'teacher leader' who is respected by his colleagues, parents, and administration."

    About the Author

Adam landed his first teaching job at Springs Middle School in East Hampton, New York. At Springs, Adam was given free reign to run the middle school social studies department as he wished. He worked quickly to revamp their outdated program, moving away from the textbook-based, teacher-driven social studies curriculum to a more student-centered, constructivist curriculum.

Adam’s biggest break in teaching came through the professional development courses offered by Jean Anastasio and Dave Perry at APL Associates. He credits these workshops for changing his career.

By combining the teaching strategies taught in these workshops with his own constructivist methodology, Adam was able to increase standardized test scores, get 100% classroom participation, and eliminate classroom management problems.

Of course, when Springs started their mentor teacher program, Adam jumped at the chance to help new teachers learn to become effective teachers.

After a few of years of mentoring, Adam decided to create a book on teaching strategies. Become an Effective Teacher in Minutes: Best Teaching Practices You Can Use Now was a direct result of his years of mentoring.

    Introduction

Have you ever noticed how teachers of older students often seem to move away from using teaching strategies that are proven to work?

Why do kindergarten students have opportunities to actively engage with learning, but college students end up sitting and listening to a professor lecture for three hours?

Think about it. In which class did the students really learn more?

Unfortunately, as students progress through their education, they come in contact with more and more teachers who are focused on managing students, rather than on educating students.

Yes, of course, you are not going to get anywhere if you have no control over your classroom. But, while many new teachers think what they need are classroom management skills, what they really need are strong instructional skills.

The focus of this book is on well-educated students as opposed to well-managed students. The book is based on the premise that the best management system is a strong instructional system.

I used most of the strategies described in this book in my own classroom. I also know many other teachers who implemented these strategies and we all met with the same amazing results. Our students' grades went up (including standardized test scores), but more importantly, the students enjoyed school.

Although I taught middle school—and used these strategies with great success at that level—I trained teachers at all levels of education. I have seen the strategies in this book used effectively as early as kindergarten. In fact, I used many of them with my own son as early as four years old. And, I used these same exact strategies when I taught adults as an adjunct professor at Manatee Community College.

Remember: Information is just information unless you do something with it!

In this book you are going to learn many different strategies, methods, tips, and tricks of Effective Teachers. These are strategies and methods that inspire active learning, increase higher order thinking skills, and create life-long learners.

You will likely be familiar with some of these ideas, while others will be completely new to you.

I strongly encourage you to print this out, mark up the strategies you already use, and focus on the ones that seem most relevant to you and your teaching style.

I do not claim originality on all these ideas—I only originated a handful of them on my own. However, these ideas are original in their compilation and in my explanation of them.

I am a student as much as I am a teacher. I have learned from my own testing and from observing the teaching techniques of some of the best teachers I know. When applicable, I will make reference to MY teachers.

My special thanks to Dr. Barry Raebeck, Dr. Lawrence McCann, Dr. Linda Bausch, Donnelly McGovern, Lisa Seff, Ken Goodman, and Merrill Harmin. I have learned so much from your work.

Extra special thanks to Dr. Jean Anastasio and David Perry whose professional development seminars have forever changed the way I teach. Any school district that is even slightly interested in improving their school must take a look at the professional development seminars offered by Jean and Dave at APL Associates.

There is so much information packed into this book that it may seem overwhelming at first, but there is a proper way to learn and apply the material taught here. It’s actually very simple; don’t try too many new things at once. Master two to three strategies at a time and then add two or three more. Before you know it, you will be well on your way to becoming an Effective Teacher In Minutes.

I hope you enjoy the book and put it to good use!!

    To a wonderful career,

    Adam Waxler

    Chapter 1: Strategies

It is important to note that strategies differ from methods. In Chapter 9 you will read about several proven constructivist teaching methods in which students are actively involved in constructing their own knowledge.

The strategies in this chapter are more like a series of tricks you can use to create an interactive classroom. Of course, there is a crossover between strategies and methods, as you will see.

I put the strategies at the beginning of the book for two reasons:

    1) You will use these strategies throughout every other aspect of teaching that you will learn in this book.

    2) While most of this book pertains to classroom teaching, these
