Navigating the Financial Universe - Christeen H. Skinner

    CHAPTER 1

The Need for a Financial Engine Check

Before leaving harbor, it is wise to check the state of your financial engine, and your attitude to finance and functioning. It may be that these are overdue for maintenance.

First though, let's be clear: somewhere within every chart there is a degree of financial acumen. It just has to be found. This is an exercise that can be done either on your own, or with assistance from a financial advisor or a professional astrologer, and preferably both.

It is curious that although most people go for regular health checks and that most also understand the basic concepts of hygiene and diet needed to maintain well-being, so few people give real attention to their financial health. There are, of course, many reasons for this: not least of which is that these routines and skills are rarely taught in schools.

Often financial attitudes are copied from parents who themselves may not be particularly well educated in this area. As you become familiar with planetary cycles you may well wish to review the position of the planets at your parents’ and even grandparents’ births to understand familial habits better. These are important legacies.

When working closely with trading or investment-orientated clients on financial matters, I am keen to learn about any early experiences of handling money and of buying and selling. As far as I can tell, those who gain experience before they leave school tend to have better financial health than those whose experiences came much later.

In particular, when working with traders, it is helpful to identify times when they have enjoyed success. Reviewing the planetary conditions under which positive events occurred is extremely helpful. Armed with this information, it becomes possible to plan and prepare for potentially favorable future periods. The same is true, of course, for periods when traders have lost (though it could be argued that these apparent failures were master classes in how NOT to trade).

This book is intended for everyone. Therefore, we cannot possibly address the myriad of possibilities that might be considered. Every chart (horoscope) is unique. In addition, your financial engine is yours alone. It may be under or even overused, but either way it is special to you. While this work cannot offer an interpretation of your personal horoscope, it can, I hope, say something about the strategies available to assist your particular financial needs and goals.

Please note that there is no singular planetary picture that decrees you will be rich or poor. What is evident in all lives is that there are financial rhythms: tides that are slow turning and at other times, tides which turn so fast there is barely time to launch the lifeboat. To prepare for either, your personal chart (with exact time, date, and place of birth) needs to be studied. That said, there are a few generalizations that can be made:

    A Word on Pluto

Most people accept that there are differences between generations. These age-definitions give context: a framework through which we understand the nuances of a period of time. What follows works on this principle: defining groups of births by the position of a single and important member of our solar system, Pluto.

In examining our financial engines, assessment of Pluto's position and status has proved a valuable exercise. It might seem absurd that a small orbiting rock at huge distance from Earth could have impact on our lives in any way. Yet study of horoscopes, and comparison with major events, suggests more than a tenuous link. It is also true that the inter-connection between Pluto's position and other planets in a chart varies hugely from one individual to another. Such data would be considered carefully when looking at a personal chart. Even without an individualized review however, it is possible to draw conclusions from the position of Pluto by sign in a chart. Pluto moves slowly: spending years in one sign before moving to the next. Its position by sign or sector of the zodiac yields invaluable information as to the tendencies and attitudes of large groups of people.

If you have your birth chart but are, as yet, are unfamiliar with the length of planet cycles you may be amused to know that by telling an astrologer that you were born with e.g., Pluto in Leo, you are also telling them that you were born between (approximately) 1939 and 1956. The more experienced the astrologer, the better able they are to mentally calculate your chart, or conversely, to know from a given planet position, when you were born. Astrologers understand generations and behavioral patterns through their knowledge of slow-moving planet cycles.

Pluto is the planet associated with regeneration and renewal: it is the dark oil, or the battery pack of your financial engine. These are good analogies in that we all know that oil and oil filters need to be changed frequently for an engine to run smoothly. We also know that batteries are drained through use and that they eventually require recharging. Again, the precise time-period between oil change or the recharging of batteries varies from person to person and requires interpretation by an experienced professional astrologer who has access to the whole chart. Yet, broad outlines using Pluto's position by sign can be given.

This is useful information for financial advisors. By understanding the needs and desires of different generations, it should be possible to build portfolios based on the individual's strengths and interests, as well as to identify areas and periods of potential weakness.

    Pluto Generations

There are six distinct Pluto groups alive today. The financial history of each of these Pluto planet periods also offers an understanding of the pressures that parents and grandparents of these distinct generational groups experienced during an individual's childhood. Tensions and occasionally memorable events will have left their mark.

Our elders’ attitude to financial affairs provides a role model that we later emulate or reject. In understanding the financial background that we absorbed as children, we can learn much about our attitudes and how we have sought to overcome negative aspects while enhancing positive ones.

Group One covers the period between 1939 and 1956 as Pluto moved through Leo, including an unusual group born between 1956 and 1957.

Group Two: covers 1957 to 1971 with Pluto in Virgo. It includes the mid 60s which, as we will see, brought profound change not just at the political and social level, but at the economic level also.

Group Three: 1972 to 1983, Pluto in Libra

Group Four: covers 1984 through 1995, Pluto in Scorpio

Group Five: covers 1995 to 2008, Pluto in Sagittarius

And Group Six: 2008 through 2024, Pluto in Capricorn

(Precise dates of sign change are given in Appendix 2.)

To be clear, each of these groups has its own financial operating system. Some need frequent oil or filter changes, while others hold their battery charge longer or recharge at a faster rate than others.

We must also note that as Pluto concludes its stay in one sign—and before crossing into the next—ripples have occurred across the financial world as new currents generated by Pluto's pending sign changes are felt. Each Pluto generation is faced with learning new financial instruments and services that were not available to earlier generations.

Though the coming years promise new—and perhaps even as yet unimaginable challenges—it should be remembered that just as other generations negotiated difficulties, we too will likely do the same.

    Financial Rapids Ahead

In 2023, Pluto will cross from Capricorn into Aquarius, and in 2036, from that sign into Pisces. The move from one sign to another is referred to in astrology as an ingress. Throughout history, ingresses made by the slow-moving planets (e.g. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) have coincided with seismic developments on the global financial stage.

The fact that the next Pluto ingress coincides within the space of a few months with Neptune's Aries ingress and with Uranus’ Gemini ingress, suggests that 2023–2026 will bring a series of heavy-duty challenges. No sooner will we have coped with one financial turmoil than the next will be upon us. While hopefully we won't need to make use of lifeboats, we will surely need to know where they are.

Whether or not we are ship-wrecked by what will surely be fast-paced developments will depend not just on our ability to negotiate the changes that lie ahead, but also the state of our financial engines.

What follows are notes on each of the Pluto generations, and how you might consider preparing for the journey ahead.

    GROUP ONE:

The Pluto in Leo Generation: 1939–1956

For the parents of those with Pluto in Leo, budgeting was part and parcel of their everyday lives. Though the rationing of the World War II years was over by the end of this period, those with Pluto in Leo grew up watching their parents making do and mending. They were also doubtless aware of how their parents saved, when possible, and how they treasured their nest eggs. It was not abnormal for their parents to bank where their own parents had banked. They may never even have thought of doing things differently. Thus many of the Pluto in Leo generation inherited loyalty to a particular bank: a loyalty that was later found to be
