Although I’ve made my living as a teacher and guidance counselor, I’ve always had a passion for writing. Thomas Bouregy and Company published my novel, Return to Paradise Cove, under their Avalon imprint. Two of my one-act plays, A Different Kind of Death, and The Flirt, have been produced, respectively, in New Haven, Connecticut, and Sacramento, California. Short stories of mine have appeared in commercial magazines such as Action and True Romance as well as in certain literary and professional ones.

Breaking up with Nancy was, as the saying goes, the straw that broke the camel's back. Oh, sure there had been others but not a one of them had come as close to knowing the real me as had she. Even now I remember every word of our parting conversation at the pastry shop where we spent countless hours sparring with one another over coffee. I can't go on this way any longer, Jack, she said, peering at me over the rim of her cup.

What are you talking about? I replied, masterful as ever at playing dumb.

Come on now; no more games. She paused and took a deep breath before frustration got the better of her. The closer I try to get to you, the farther away you push me. It's almost as if you want us to break up.

    I shrugged. Don't be ridiculous.

One thing for sure; I refuse to put up with it anymore. To emphasize the point she set her cup down with a thud.

I love you and you love me.

Determined not to allow herself to fall under my spell, she replied in a low but firm voice. Love's not a one-way street, you know? Stirring uneasily, I did not answer and she went on, Unfortunately, you've taken my love as you might take a wet sponge and squeezed it dry.

I swallowed hard and replied feebly, Why would I do that?

Raw hurt glittered in those dark eyes of hers. All I know, Jack, is that deep down inside you're a very angry man. Unfortunately, I'm a personnel worker, not a mental health clinician; so I can't deal with it anymore, she said, her frustration reaching a crescendo. And believe me it's not for lack of trying.

So threatened was I by the accuracy of her insights about me that I did what I always do in such cases; I lashed out at her. What a fount of information you are, Dr. Freud, I mocked. Your knowledge of human behavior never ceases to amaze me.

Oh, what's the use of wasting my breath talking with you? At her wit's end, she leaped to
