The Beginning of Sloane and James

    A Program short story

    Part I

James Murphy is the most infuriating person I know. I think this as he holds my wrapped turkey sub over his head and just out of my reach.

Give it back or I’ll knee your balls so hard that—

Hey, James says, sounding deeply offended. It’s just a sandwich, Sloane. It’s not worth depriving the world of little James’s, is it?

I snort a laugh and jump to snatch my lunch out of his hand.

Can you two stop fucking around and come over here? Brady asks. He’s been holding up the tent poles for the better part of two minutes, and his arms are starting to shake. I swear to God, James, if you don’t—

Relax, I tell Brady, flashing an amused side eye at James as he bites back his smile. I’ve got it.

I climb inside the fabric tent and hold up the center pole so Brady can slip the ends into the fasteners on the ground. Once the tent is secure, we head out to the picnic table where James has set out three cans of soda and a bag of chips.

Brady grabs his sub and throws the other to James before sitting next to him.

It sucks that Dana couldn’t come this weekend, I tell Brady. He shrugs.
