CHAPTER 1
UNDERSTANDING YOUR SELF ESTEEM
Self-esteem has to do with the way you see yourself, the value and worth you put on yourself. While positive self-esteem is good; low self-esteem is bad as this is a negative condition where you see yourself as not being important and having very little worth. People with low self-esteem do not place much regard on themselves and consider themselves inferior to others. We throw away things of no value −into the trash can. Therefore, if you have a low-self-esteem, you will show little or no regard for yourself. People will also treat you like trash.
Low self esteem is limiting. It makes it difficult to fulfill one’s true potential in life. It kills initiative to set and pursue personal goals. People with low self-esteem will find it difficult to put efforts into their education or careers; they will also weakly accept poor treatment meted out to them from family and friends.
Characteristics Of Low Self-Esteem
Social Withdrawal
Since most people with low self-esteem regard themselves poorly; they tend to avoid any form of social gatherings. They do this because as they feel they have very little to offer, and they also do not want to be constantly reminded of the inadequacies they believe they possess.
No Social Skills
Since they tend to attend very few parties and other forms of social functions, they do not have the social skills that are necessary for successful social communication and interaction. Social skills such as maintaining eye contact with someone, showing confidence and greeting someone with a smile are absent when attending social events.
Neglect of Personal Hygiene and Overall General Look
Additionally, some people with low self-esteem neglect their physical appearance; often appearing messy and unpolished. They do this because they feel, what’s the use? I will never be good enough, so why even try!
This is why they are usually shabbily dressed with unkempt hair smelling bad.
Skeptical about Compliments
Also, they do not accept genuine compliments wholeheartedly, as they feel they are indirectly being derided. To them, genuine compliments are regarded as sarcasm or even a statement of pity. They are not able to accept a compliment as they have conditioned themselves to believe they cannot project anything good. Therefore, any compliment, no matter how true, seems false.
Focus on the Negative
Individuals with low self-esteem will focus on the negative and downplay any positive experiences they may have. The truth is that everyone experiences the good, the bad and the ugly. What you focus on is entirely up to you. People with low self-esteem feel more comfortable noticing and amplifying the negative things that happen to them. They unconsciously seek the bad in order to justify their beliefs that they aren’t
