About this ebook

Eric Hayes expected a quiet couple weeks of leave before reporting for SEAL training. He arrives at his family home to find the house already occupied by Liam—his younger brother—and Liam's friends from college. Liam thinks Eric would be a good fit with Scott, a childhood friend, but Eric finds himself captivated by another houseguest.

A.H. Shaw is a Ph.D. student, donating his spring break to helping Liam with an engineering project. Shaw's snarky wit and lean good looks capture Eric's attention from the first glance. Eric thrives on challenges, and Shaw is exactly what he's looking for.

To the ladies of B.S. Thank you for the support, the encouragement, and the many laughs.

You can stop on the street, Eric told the taxi driver as they pulled up to the end of the long, manicured drive of his family’s ranch-style home. The midday sun had burned away the nightly chill from being so close to the Northern California coast. Eric loved the east too, but nothing was quite like being home in Monterey.

Eric tipped the driver then wrestled his U.S. Navy duffle out of the back. He was so eager to get to the house, to say hello to his mother, that it took him longer than it should have to realize there were more cars in the circular drive than there should be—and his mother’s Acura wasn’t one of them.

Eric! a familiar voice yelled from his left. He was nearly bowled over as his brother tackled him in a hug. I can’t believe you’re home! Why didn’t you call?

It’s good to see you too, squirt. Eric pulled back and held Liam at arms’ length, finding his brother much taller than the last time he’d seen him a year earlier. Between Liam’s college schedule and Eric being assigned across the country in Maryland, it was difficult to get them in the same place. They’d usually see each other at the holidays, but Liam had been on a trip for the entirety of winter break this past year.

Wow. You might be taller than me now.

Ha! I made it to 6’3. I’ve got you beat by two inches. Liam had always been irrepressibly bubbly. He’d also been a late bloomer, not getting much of their father’s height until college. He was fair-haired and had blue eyes like their mother, while Eric favored their father with dark hair and eyes. I can’t believe you didn’t you tell us you were coming.

"Leave schedule got juggled when my next assignment changed, and I thought I’d surprise Mom. I planned to drive up to Santa Clara this weekend to surprise you, so what are you doing here?" Santa Clara University was a ninety-minute drive from Monterey in favorable traffic. Liam wouldn’t pop down during the week on a whim.

Dude, Liam said with a laugh. It’s spring break.

No… Eric had a horrible, sinking feeling. That was last week!

"It’s really this week. And worse for you, Mom is in Napa doing this wine thing until the weekend, so she let me bring a
