      Introduction

      Often considered tiny works of art, buttons have been used and collected for thousands of years, sometimes simply because they are old or they were made during a specific era or in a particular country.  Buttons are also collected because they represent an additional collecting theme such as military and nursing, and oftentimes it’s because they are of historic or commemorative interest, as for buttons on regimental uniforms used in specific campaigns, and for many other reasons too.

      Before we get going, however, let me point out that ‘button’ has another meaning, other than being used mainly on clothing, and it describes badges and pins and other items normally worn for decorative or identification purposes.  The term ‘button’ is commonly used in The United States and refers to what people in most other countries know as badges and brooches.
