      The water is incredibly cold. Vincent—his friends call him "Vinny—is calling out for help, pleading and begging for help, from his fiancee. He’s lost feeling in his hands and feet. He can barely hang on to his kayak, but even that small craft isn’t much help. He’s going down, fast. There isn't even time for Vincent's life to flash before his eyes.  He’s too worried about survival, and wondering why the woman he’s promised to marry isn’t helping.

      The day began perfectly, but it sure as hell had gotten worse.

      Friends told Vinny last night at the bar not to even thinking about kayaking in the Hudson River. It was only April they said. The daytime temperature would not be even close to fifty, maybe forty-six degrees at the most. The water would be freezing cold and the Hudson would be way too choppy for kayaking. His fiancee Angelika was part of the chorus. Kayaking is a huge part of the couple’s life. But she didn’t want to get close to the Hudson. And she had other issues with Vincent, too.

      But neither she nor any of their friends could convince Vincent that he was wrong. He just loved adventure too much.

      Angelika and Vincent fought, argued, and battled, in the bar. They went home mad but fell asleep in each other's arms.

      The next morning, Vinnie couldn't stop thinking about kayaking. He wanted to go to Bannerman's Castle on Pollepel Island, have a picnic, a few beers, then head back home. It's the perfect way to spend a Sunday, he tells Angelika again.

      The island is a treasure of the Hudson River, a state park that includes the fabled Bannerman Castle, known by some as Bannerman’s Military Arsenal.

      Bannerman, a Scotsman, built in the 19th century. It looked like a medieval castle, but it served as a warehouse for his military surplus business. The building was closed until about thirty years ago because both local Native Americans and Dutch settlers believed it was filled with evil spirits and ghosts.

      Vinny didn't care about any of that. He just wanted to get into his kayak and hit the water.

      Pollepel Island is about fifty miles north of New York City, and 1,000 feet from the east bank of the Hudson.

      A tough row? Sure. But Angelika and Vincent had been kayaking together for years. Making a trip to Pollepel was a no-brainer for the couple. They’d hardly work up a sweat.

      The kayaking will be challenging, but what's wrong with a challenge, Vinny argues.

      Angelika gave in. Vincent won.

      But now here he is fighting for his life. He's a big guy, a muscular guy, but Vincent's no match for the rushing current or the freezing waters. Would Vincent be doomed to a watery grave? Not even the strongest man in the world can fight hypothermia.

      Here's another problem: Vincent's not wearing a life jacket. Angelika is, but he is not.

      Suddenly, Vincent’s blue-and-red kayak flips. The river’s powerful current—with its three-to-four-foot swells—is pulling him away from Angelika. Vincent pleads with her to hand him a paddle so he can use it to drag himself to her kayak.
