      A truly bad book. It's a wonder that a book this short can be so repetitive. Probably the authors simply did know enough to fill the modest length, so they kept repeating the little they did know. Cliches are used often and, almost as often, used inaccurately. Some sentences are simply ungrammatical. Is this a translated work? Often it reads like a translation made by someone with an indifferent command of both languages. No illustrations. Even with all the overly detailed descriptions of weapons, Osprey editions give readers an illustration now and then. Finally, the writers don't appear to know anything about warfare. How else would a common foot soldier be expected to fight in a "strategic" fashion? They don’t know the meaning of the word!
      Whoever edited this book was either half asleep or gave up caring long ago. The verb form is not “sieged” but “besieged.” Look up “decimate.” It is not a synonym for an individual death, as in the example “to see the king decimated in battle…” I have a suggestion in that instance, use “killed.” And tell me, is there an excuse for writing: “With their population now sparsely populated…”? Bah. Enough. It’s junk. Toss it. Burn it. Put it in the outhouse. Don’t waste your time reading it. ARC

    Introduction

    What names come to mind when you think of the most merciless empires in the history of civilization? Most would think of the ancient Romans or the Mongols. While the aforementioned empires are two noteworthy contenders, they certainly were not the first to encompass an incredible stretch of land under their control.

    The Assyrian Empire grew from a successful city-state in Mesopotamia (mostly modern-day Iraq) to the greatest empire to ever reside in the Near East. The ancient Assyrians are often considered to be the world’s first powerful empire. When the Assyrians were most powerful from roughly 900 BCE – 600 BCE, their empire encompassed Mesopotamia, the eastern Mediterranean coast, parts of modern-day Iran, Turkey, and even into Egypt.

    The Assyrians had their struggles like most empires, but they successfully utilized superior warfare technology and a mammoth army to brutalize their neighbors. A skilled army that was the largest in the world may have overpowered other kingdoms, but it would take the vision of many determined rulers to make the empire the most feared in the world.

    Without a doubt the Assyrians were the most feared kingdom in the Near East, but they also made the biggest cultural, scientific, and historical impact of any group in ancient Mesopotamia. If not for the efforts of a few remarkably intelligent and driven kings, Mesopotamian history would have been lost forever.

    Chapter One

    Assyrian Origins

    Where did the Assyrian Empire Begin?

    Geographically, the Assyrian Kingdom was situated in northern Mesopotamia with the Tigris River flowing through its boundaries. Mesopotamia was the ancient land nestled between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers which encompassed most of modern-day Iraq. The Assyrian Kingdom bordered eastern Syria and parts of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). Their ancient rival, the Babylonians, were positioned in the southern section of Mesopotamia.

    The land of the Assyrians was protected by the Taurus Mountains to the north and the Zagros Mountains to the east. Due to the fertile soil of the land they occupied, they were able to grow an abundance of crops such as grain and barley. In addition to the plethora of crops available to feed its people, the Assyrians hunted animals such as antelope and bears.

    This perfect location served as the epicenter for the Assyrian Kingdom to grow into one of the most formidable forces the world had ever seen at the time.

    The Beginning of an Empire

    The foundation of the Assyrian Kingdom can be traced back to the ancient city-state of Ashur. Ashur became wealthy through extensive trade networks in the region of Anatolia.

    Roughly one century after Ashur rose to prominence around 1900 BCE, King Shamashi Adad I drove out the Amorites who inhabited the region. After the death of Shamashi Adad I, the Assyrians fell under control of the rising Babylonian Empire to the south. Assyria was able to break away from Babylonian control after the death of Hammurabi, but they would fall under control of the Mitanni. 

    Once the Mitanni were driven out of the region, this allowed King Adad Nirari I to make the first significant expansion of the Assyrian realm. At the turn of the 13th century BCE, Adad Nirari I, began to exert Assyrian influence throughout Mesopotamia and this fierce ambition would be present in many powerful kings of the future. 

    Military Society

    The foundation of Assyrian society and what separated it from other Mesopotamian groups was their military acumen. Their vast rise to power was due to a strict and extensive military relentlessly trained to conquer foreign enemies. This fierce ambition began at the top of society with a series of ruthless kings who had a lust for power and glory. From Tiglath-Pileser I to Ashurbanipal, generations of highly-skilled military tacticians were fearless in battle and led their soldiers into battle with the promise of glory for the entire kingdom.

    As inspirational as the kings were in Assyrian society, the thousands of soldiers on the frontline were equally as important to the strength of the empire. Without a tenacious group of skilled fighters, the Assyrians would have never risen to claim a
