About this ebook
Atri, one among the seven sages, an incarnation of Lord Brahma, was the purest among human beings, the most radiant and an upholder of truth. His very name refers to one who does not have the 3 gunas of satwa, rajas and tamas. It was to Sage Atri and the other members of his gothra that the fifth mandal of the Rigveda was revealed. The thought of Sage Atri brings to one's mind his wife, Anasuya. Representing pure 'purusha' and pure 'prakrithi', they formed an ideal couple who lead an ideal family life and lived to serve humanity. Due to her devotion to God, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara were born as sons to her, being respectively Chandra, Dattatreya and Durvasa. Anasuya persuaded another ideal wife, Sumathi, to revoke her curse in order to save the world. She used the power of her own tapas to restore Sumathi's husband to her. During Rama's vanavaasa, they were an aged couple; yet, they served Rama, Sita and Lakshmana with full of love and devotion. Sage Atri was a disciplinarian, a person with a high degree of restraint, who engaged himself in people's welfare and was proud of his wife's divine powers. He was respected even by the chief of the gods, Devendra. Sage Atri's fame spread from the time of the Vedas to the age of Mahabharatha. It was because of his timely counsel to Drona that the rampage and the bloody carnage on the battlefield was stopped. Thus ,he was instrumental in preventing the destruction of the world and showing the path of salvation to Drona.

Bharatha Samskruti Prakashana, which has the major objective of acquainting our children with Bharathiya culture in its true form has brought out a number of books based on two of our great epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha. The chief among them are the Epic Characters of the Mahabharatha and the Ramayana. These beautiful books have come out in a number of languages and have been welcomed by educational institutions, the government and the public wholeheartedly. We are delighted to learn that the Bharatha Samskruti Prakashana has brought out another set of ten books on Great Maharshis of Bharatha.
These books acquaint the society with the great sages who built our great culture. They are great souls who have found out truth and devoted their life, energy and experience for the welfare of the people of this planet. They were extraordinary human beings having great wisdom, vast experience and character worthy of imitation. They gifted everything to the world without seeking fame or any kind of gain. Welfare of the world was their sole object. (Lokassamastah Sukhino Bhavantu). A few among such great men are introduced to us through these books. By a study of these books let our young boys and girls develop qualities such as faith in truth and good character and become vibrant individuals and useful citizens of this great land of Bharatha.
Let Bharatha Samskrithi Prakashana bring out many such useful books and help people become better citizens and make our country great among the nations of the world. May God bless the scholars who have written these books and those who edited them and brought them out in attractive forms. We pray to God for the good of all.
