Everything Imaginable
To This Small Mind
I am a big green apple,
a wide eyed owl, a ten foot wave
lifting a big blue sea.
I am a monk pondering God,
praying for peace.
A red eyed alcoholic begging
for money to buy a big bottle of the cheapest
whiskey I can find.
I am a mother, a father,
a son and daughter.
A man condemned to die
in one week, pacing my cell dreading day’s first light.
I am the eye of the hurricane
calm as I blow out their lights,
A child’s doll, an over-due bill
that will not go away.
I am everything imaginable by
this small mind awaiting the cool,
calm earth where I will find eternal sleep.

Spilled Milk
I remember that night staring into
the thick blanket of stars overhead
when my mother explained:
"You see, there, yes there where you
are looking, that is the Milky Way.
It looks like milk got spilled where
the stars are so thick and white,
and I cannot begin to tell you why."
I remember that so vividly. My mother
young and vibrant, still alive and healthy.
The stars so white and clear. And God
so close to me with Jesus at his side.
Now the stars are mostly obscured
by city lights. I don’t spend so much time
outside at night. But some nights I feel
my mother and God smiling as I look up
into the star lit sky, envisioning
spilled milk they are so thick and white,
and I cannot tell you
