    Zadie Smith is an English writer of fiction and non-fiction. Her first novel, White Teeth, was highly successful and established her as one of the most prominent writers of her generation. Her successive works have helped to consolidate this.

    Smith is the daughter of a Jamaican mother and an English father. She grew up in London, which is the setting for many of her works of fiction, and studied English literature at the University of Cambridge. She is an acclaimed writer who has received several prizes for her books, including the Whitbread First Novel Award for White Teeth in 2000 and the Orange Prize for Fiction for On Beauty in 2006. Smith’s literary style varies from different forms of realism to highly experimental fiction. She is known for her social satire, sharp observations and lively dialogues, and for her handling of subjects such as race, class, immigration, gender, identity and religion.
