      Iseul leaped past Chikondi, flinging himself straight down into the deepest part of the pool. Chill shocked through him, hitting harder than the sudden wet, the fall, the laughter sounding above him. He sank under the churning surface of the water and let the muffled sounds soothe him. Blue rippled all around with shimmering bands of yellow-white from the sun pounding down from the sky.

      Beautiful.

      The water stilled further. Further. His lungs burned a bit but Iseul stayed under, drifting under the water towards the sandy bottom of the pool. A fish, tiny and golden, darted by. His chest heaved once. Then a second time.

      Iseul fought against the need to breathe. The peace of the water enticed. But his lungs needed air…

      He pushed up, kicking with his legs and thrusting against the water with all the strength of his arms. The water's surface seemed so far away as his chest heaved, heaved, released a thread of air that bubbled around him, heaved again.

      You idiot! Chikondi bellowed the instant Iseul's head broke the surface. "I thought you
