Solomon Islands is a sovereign state in Oceania, east of Papua New Guinea, consisting of nearly one thousand islands. During Roger's 10 year stay as a doctor there, the islands progressed through being a British Protectorate, to self-government and finally gained independence. This book is a story of these years, offering descriptions and tales on most of the islands, remote areas that few people ever get to see. It records a way of life that has all but disappeared, and segues with Roger’s personal story; a tragic air crash that left him bringing up two young children on the islands.Many facets of these islands impinge on the present day world, from their contribution in sport, music and the origin of one of the most evocative of places, Bali Hai. The main island, Guadalcanal, was a household name during World War II as it became the site for the Battle of Guadalcanal, a 6-month conflict between Allied forces and Japanese troops. Solomoni provides a rare and interesting insight into an unseen world. A variety of vivid photographs illustrate important events and the beauty of the islands. It will appeal to travellers, readers with an interest in anthropology and those with a medical interest.

Roger Webber
Roger Webber grew up in East Africa which gave him early exposure to travel to foreign countries. He qualified in medicine and worked in the Solomon Islands for the next ten years, during which he undertook research that led to a programme of eliminating filariasis from the world. He was posted to Tanzania as a Medical Coordinator of an aid programme and completed his second travel book. In 1985 he joined the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where he made extensive visits to Asia resulting in the book’s title.
