It’s all about the story, as far as Rod Kackley is concerned. Whether it’s Shocking True Crime Stories or one of his many works of fiction. Rod wants to keep you turning pages and reading incredible tales of criminals, their victims, and their capture. Spoiler alert: No matter how long it takes, the bad guys rarely win. But it’s the criminal who is often the most compelling character. That’s true whether it’s “Mommy Deadliest,” the story of a woman who kills her children, or “The Murder of Thora Chamberlain,” the story of a teenage girl and her kidnapper. In Rod’s world of fiction, he spins yarns about “The Coffee Shoppe Killer, a woman who kills her lovers when they disappoint her. A teenage girl wraps a serial killer around her finger in “Go Big or Go Dead.” Then there’s “The Murder of Emma Brown,” where two young women go out to party one night, and one only returns home. Written in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Rod’s books and stories allow his readers to brush up against the world of crime without getting hurt. And it’s a heck of a ride!

Loretta Bailey knows something is wrong. Call it mother's intuition
if you like, but the woman who lives in Covington, Louisiana, far from her daughter who is going to school in Kalamazoo, Michigan, fears the worst.
Aniya Mack, 'Nyia to her friends, a twenty-four-year-old African-American woman is studying psychology at Western Michigan University. She is already working at the Great Lakes Center for Autism Treatment and Research. Aniya plans to spend her life helping children with mental health issues.
Western Michigan University is more than an institution in Kalamazoo; the city and its suburbs depend on WMU, its students, teachers and faculty. Just look at the numbers: close to 76,000 people call Kalamazoo home. Western Michigan University’s enrollment is 22,562.
WMU’s PR department brags that ninety days after they get their diplomas, ninety-one percent of the school’s graduates are working, in the military, doing full-time voluntary work, or working on master’s degrees or doctorates.
Don’t jump to the conclusion that most of these people are only finding work as baristas or bartenders. WMU claims eighty-eight percent say they are satisfied with their jobs.
So the future is like a giant ray of sunshine that Aniya can ride to a glorious life, right?
Maybe not.
No matter what Loretta thinks, or has been told, Aniya hasn’t actually been enrolled at Western Michigan University since the spring of 2017.
A beautiful, sweet and loving young woman; Aniya had been a standout student in high school. Not only was she a member of the National Honors Society; Aniya was a member of the marching band, a cheerleader, and captain of the Majorettes. After graduation, Aniya joined the JaDore Dance Team in Kalamazoo, an all-female group that specializes in blending hip-hop and contemporary dance styles.
Loretta is so proud. Aniya — who has six brothers and six sisters — is going to be somebody.
Now, it's true that any mother can be forgiven for thinking her child is the exceptional one, but in Loretta's case, it's more than maternal pride. Aniya is like a bright light for her friends, too. She could be walking down the middle aisle at Walmart and break into a complicated dance step to the music on the store's intercom.
Aniya walks into a room, any room, and everyone turns their eyes toward her. She tells her friends that if anything happens to her, she wouldn't want to look down from Heaven and see them dressed in black. Aniya says everyone should be wearing bright, happy colors at her funeral. Just talk, right. College kids don't think they or any of their friends are going to die. It's a time of happiness, of optimism, all
