About this ebook

A lovingly curated collection of 365 charming portraits of our favorite four-legged companions, with anecdotes celebrating dogs’ endearing and irresistible quirks, based on Sally Muir’s popular “Dog a Day” Facebook page.

Sally Muir’s debuted her “Dog a Day” project on Facebook in 2013: “My name is Sally Muir and this is a new gallery where I will add a dog drawing/painting every day, adding up to a massive 365-day dogfest.” As her Facebook page took off, so did the number of Sally’s portraits and her fame.

Drawing on the substantial collection of artwork on her site, A Dog a Day is an irresistible collection of 365 beautiful portraits of dogs of all shapes and sizes, depicted in a range of mediums—from loosely worked sketches, prints, and charcoal drawings to oil paintings and lithographs. The artwork is accompanied by short anecdotes throughout, that reflects on these beloved animals’ goofy, loyal, and spunky dispositions.

Charming and whimsical, A Dog a Day is a must for all dog lovers, a loving collection that guarantees a year’s worth of tail-wagging sweetness.

Sally Muir

Artist Sally Muir is based in Bath, UK and is a prodigious portrait painter of dogs. Other subjects include human portraits and landscapes, as well as the occasional rodent and bird. For years Ms. Muir focused on her knitwear business Muir & Osborne as both a designer and author. With her partner Joanna Osborne, they have published seven knitting pattern books that include Best in Show, Knit Your Own Dog, (also Cat, Pet, Zoo, Farm and Dinosaur) and the children’s book Patch’s Grand Dog Show. Ms. Muir returned to university as a mature student with a concentration on Fine Art. Children’s portraits gave way to dog portraits. Muir is the recipient of many awards and her work appears regularly in galleries. She accepts and enjoys commission work — dogs and humans alike.

    Introduction

I’ve had dogs all my life. My parents had four generations of poodles in the 1950s and 1960s. When the 1970s arrived, they moved on to Afghan hounds—Casanis and Ottoline, a mother and daughter who were beautiful, wayward, and not too bright. Following them came Battersea, an apparently charming mongrel who regularly bit my mother when nobody was looking. They finally reverted back to poodles with Bognor, a beautiful, silly, apricot standard. Inexplicably, they then moved on to cats.

I took over the family dog ownership with Fanny, a rescue with big hair, like a backup member of Duran Duran. She had a huge personality and firm views. Then came Dorothy, a Dalmatian, who was sweet natured and loved everyone. At the same time, we accidentally acquired Jack Swan, the most beautiful golden greyhound that we found wandering the streets of Bath in the southwest of England. I said I’d look after him for the weekend—we had him for one short year before he died in his sleep. Following Jack Swan came two whippets: devoted Lily, who is always by my side, and Peggy, slightly less devoted and always in a patch of sun.

For almost as long as I have had dogs, I have drawn and painted them, and mine are featured multiple times in this book. Several years ago, I began a simple Facebook project called A Dog a Day, where I posted my dog art
