Your relationship with your peachfront will get off to a good start after you're up-to-date on the following topics:
*Meet the Peach-fronted Conure
*Bringing Your New Peachfront Home
*The Right Cage or Aviary
*The Right Diet
*Taming and Training
*Talking Tips
*Bathing and Grooming
*The Hobby Breeder
*Biting: How to Make It Stop
*Calming the Noisy Bird
*Life Expectancy of Peach-fronted Conures
Note: This book is not a guide to breeding peachfronts for profit and should not be read by anyone looking to breed birds for quick cash. Also, since I am not a veterinarian, I don't spend much time talking about illness or injury. If you think your conure is sick or injured, consult with a veterinarian as soon as possible. A book can only do so much. Sometimes, there is no substitute for the real world guidance of more experienced people who can give you hands-on advice.

This author hasn't been associated with the blog peachfront.com for many years, although in years gone by some of this information was published there as well.
I've made every effort to ensure that the information in this book was correct, but a book is never a substitute for your good judgment or the good judgment of an avian vet. If your bird is sick, don't wait. Contact an emergency vet for help right now. Before We Begin
IF YOU RECOGNIZE THE signs of aging in birds, you may be surprised at the peach-fronted conure I selected to use on the cover of this book. Courtney― hatched in my home on April 16, 1990― was twenty-eight years old at the time I took this photograph. Parrots, even small conures like peachfronts, are among the longest-lived pets you can choose. There are many rewards to a lasting relationship with a pair-bond bird. The goal of this book is to give you all the core information you will need to live your best life with your new conure.
There are many photographs of beautiful young birds, but I felt an older bird was a better representation of what we're seeking here― a long, happy life with a happy, healthy pet.
About the Pronouns
PEACH-FRONTED CONURES are a sexually monomorphic species. You can't just look at an adult bird and know whether the gender is male or female. In the past, I would use the gender-neutral pronoun it
to refer to birds where the gender was unknown. Today, the preferred gender-neutral pronoun is they,
even when we're talking about an individual. Most of us are uncomfortable when our pet is referred to as an it,
so this change is undoubtedly a welcome one that is long overdue for most of us. I have made every effort to avoid the use of the word it
in this new book.
Still, I've been writing about conures since the early 1980s, and some parts of this book are adapted from my personal diaries and my previously published magazine articles in Bird Talk, Birds USA, and American Cage-Bird Magazine. There are probably places in this book where I've slipped into old-fashioned language and referred to a bird as an it
when I didn't know the gender. I apologize in advance.
A Final Note
ALL ERRORS AND OPINIONS are my own. Your personal experiences may be different. As always, the ultimate responsibility for your actions belongs to you. If you spot any errors, feel free to message me on Instagram @peachfront, and I'll fix it up in the next update. Well, matters of opinion might not get changed, but we're all adults here and we know how that goes...
Nothing in this book is intended to replace the advice of an avian vet. If your bird is sick, consult with a vet or other local expert without delay.
Introduction
FOR THE LAST THIRTY-seven years, it has been my privilege to share my life with one of the most charming little parrots you will ever hope to meet. As I write these words, a lovable twenty-eight-year-old peachfront I bred myself is snuggled up on the playpen next to my desk. For many of us, there is truly no better pet available.
Within the pages of this book, you will find not only the most up-to-date information (as of 2019), but the true-to-life story of my actual experiences with adopting, breeding, and living with these birds, both as aviary beauties and as personal pets. In 2011, I achieved a lifelong dream of traveling to Bolivia to study their native habitat, and I'll also talk about what I learned there to help you better understand the psychology of these adorable small conures.
This book centers on one species, the peachfront conure, known to science as Eupsittula aurea. The genus name was changed only a few years ago, and in most older books you'll see the same species referred to as Aratinga aurea. Some of the care information will undoubtedly also be useful if you have one of the peachfront's close relatives in the Eupsittula genus, including the popular E. canicularis, better known in English as the half-moon or orange-fronted conure. I've observed this species in its wild habitat in Mexico.
By any name, the orange-front is a close enough relative to the peachfront that many people confuse the two. If you picked up this book by mistake, intending to buy a half-moon conure book instead, stick around for two reasons. 1) The care, psychology, and breeding are very much the same, and 2) I'm not sure there is a separate half-moon book out there available for you to buy.
The book can also provide insights into the care, training, and breeding of other conures, although the focus won't be on those species.
Is that a hand going up in back?
Question: Hey, that's cool and all about the conures, but my breeder said I had a peach-fronted parakeet, and it looks exactly the same, and... um, I was just wondering what's up with that?
Peach-fronted parakeet is the official common English name for the peach-fronted conure. As far as the ornithologists are concerned, conure
is a pet store name. All slim, mid-sized parrot species with long pointed tails are parakeets. However, in this volume, as in most other pet-oriented bird care books, we will continue
