    About The Author

    What's This All About?

We'd all like to be more creative, but it's challenging. By definition creativity is an amorphous, trickster of a thing; hard to grasp, easy to loose, showing up when least expected. Improving creativity can be like exercising a muscle we don't understand.

This book is about becoming aware of creativity so it can be improved.

I've identified five different ways people come up with their Big Ideas that I call Creative Paths – the ways we get from no idea to Big Idea, that great book or song or plan. Most people have one or two Paths they use by default.

Being aware which Path or Paths you travel to get to Big Ideas is useful, and may give you ideas how to practice them. But the real way to improve your Creativity is to learn to use other Paths. This book is about finding how you create, then giving you more options to get to your Big Idea.

But, to help you understand where this came from, a bit about how I ended up writing this.

    Big Ideas About Big Ideas

I've always been a creative type. I loved science fiction as a child and tried my hand at fiction writing time and again (mostly for fun). I've played role-playing games and even developed them. I was always coming up with Big Ideas – more than I had time to use.

I became fascinated with creativity itself; how people came up with ideas, how a few inspirations or dice rolls could make a character. Some two decades before I wrote this book I began experimenting with random programs to make things like character names. This resulted in me creating www.SeventhSanctum.com, a site of random idea, name, and story generators to inspire Big Ideas.

My work at Seventh Sanctum led me to become interested in just how people create. By studying the way people became inspired, I could see common patterns in how people got creative. This led me to come up with my theory that there are five basic ways people come up with new Big Ideas – the Five Creative Paths.

With this theory, we can examine how we create, how others create, and how to both overcome our limits and walk other Creative Paths we're not familiar with.

But a quick note for the sake of clarity.

    The Realm Of Theory

The Five Creative Paths are a theory. I used my own creativity and analysis to come up with a way to understand how we arrive at Big Ideas. All theories are tools, and all theories are incomplete, including this one.

This book is not the only resource you'll want to read on creativity – you will want to seek others that fit your needs. This guide may be updated and expanded. Creativity is a tricky thing, so there's always more to add, always more to find, always exceptions.

Use this book as a tool, and find what works for you. Where it doesn't, find others.
