Introduction
Some memorable sentences are brief and historically poignant, such as I have a dream
(Martin Luther King), or Et tu, Brute?
(Julius Caesar, according to William Shakespeare).
Some are longer and amusing, such as Groucho Marx’s quip, I never forget a face, but in your case I’d be glad to make an exception,
or Oscar Wilde’s wisecrack, Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.
Still other sentences are proverbial and are associated with key historical figures, such as Winston Churchill’s insight, A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty,
or John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s challenge, My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.
But perhaps no sentence is more famous than that found in the third chapter and sixteenth verse of the Gospel of John in the New Testament of the Bible (John 3:16). The aim of this work is to examine in detail this crucial sentence that was first written in Greek but now has been translated into hundreds of world languages.
The pattern of this book is simple. In considering the meaning of any sentence, it is necessary to give attention to the wider and the narrower literary context of the sentence, for foreign ideas can easily be read into a statement when it is considered out of its context. Then follows an examination of each word and phrase in the sentence. This leads into some final comments about John
