She let go of everything and fell, like a bird skydiving with its wings closed. It was the most gracious fall Judy-675 had ever seen. There was no fear in Diane-042’s eyes as she was falling, just a smile. Death seemed inevitable, and it would have been a worthy one. Such beauty was worth the price. And at times Diane looked like she almost wanted it, taunting death with a passion that couldn’t be programmed.

And then, when the ground was approaching fast, ready to catch Diane's fragile body with a deadly blow, right before it was too late, a swing would glide through the air and bring Diane a new handle, another chance. For the audience, it was all a spectacle, but Judy knew, she felt it, that every handle Diane grabbed on to was a choice, one that she may not make one day.

It was a dance with death, one that audiences of all ages loved and came to see almost every day, gasping, crying, and fervently applauding. And so did Judy, for years, looking up from the back rows of the circus at Diane’s flying trapeze dances.

To most, the show was magic, but to Judy, it was much more than that. Her usher job seemed just an excuse to witness the beauty of Diane’s performance. And many times, when the circus was almost empty and quiet, when the house lights were off and only a spotlight shined on Diane, it seemed like she was dancing just for her one true fan — Judy.

On days when nothing seemed to bring her joy, Judy knew, that she could always look up from the lowest of the rows, and there she would be, Diane, beautiful and tender, sparkling in her colorful outfits and makeup, and smiling, always smiling at her.

Diane had given her so much, that Judy wondered more and more if she would ever be able to give something in return, if someday she would be enough for Diane too.

Sometimes Judy would see Diane late after the show, wondering the circus building like a ghost, dressed in her regular clothes, with no makeup or flashy hairdo, and with no smile. Not her stage smile, but her real one, the one Diane used to have when children would give her flowers, the smile that over time she lost.

It was a smile Judy felt she had to bring back, a smile that could save Diane, that could push her to keep latching on to the handles, a smile that could even save them both.

One day after a show, Judy waited as usual for the audience to leave, and before closing the doors to the arena, she looked around for a final checkup, from the bleachers, all the way down, when she saw it. Something sparkling in the bright lights, calling on to her from the stage floor.

Judy took the arena steps down and approached the circular stage in the center. Down on the floor, an orange rose bulb lay like a severed head, fallen from one of Diane’s bouquets. A gift for Judy.

She looked around, the arena was empty, and hid the flower in her coat’s breast pocket. Immediately a smile lit Judy’s face, and she knew that it was time she did the same for Diane.

As she walked out of the arena and down the steps to the basement, the smile stayed on Judy’s human looking face, spreading warm and happy sensations through her entire body. She was lean, with soft pale skin and light brown hair that barely touched her shoulders and was wearing a blue usher pantsuit and a white shirt. A cyborg model made for human interaction, made for Sector A. Only by getting very close to her, would humans notice who Judy really was, something they couldn’t notice about Diane. At times even Judy couldn’t tell if Diane was a cyborg, but deep down she felt Diane was one, just like she felt the immense pain Diane brought with her to the stage, pain that Judy hoped to heal.

Judy reached the circus basement and walked down the long concrete corridor leading to the exit, trying as hard as she could to contain her excitement about the small bulge in her breast pocket. Diane’s flower was finally resting where it belonged.

Arriving at the security checkpoint, Judy straightened her demeanor and stopped in front of the body scanner. One of the two cyborg guards motioned her to proceed through it. She did and continued walking when a loud beep echoed through the cavernous corridor.

Stop! said the guard. Judy-675, go back in the scanner.

Judy froze for a moment, standing at the threshold of sacrifice and happiness. The choice was obvious, but she wasn’t allowed to make it.

One of the guards drew its weapon and the other grabbed Judy by the arm and pulled her into the scanner.

    The scanner screamed again.

Please don’t, she thought. Words she couldn’t, shouldn’t even think. Saying them would be her end.

The guard reached inside her coat with its cold hand and took out the rose bulb. It stared at the flower and inspected it, slowly removing every petal, until there was nothing left in its hand.
