About the Author
Foreword
Preface
In a country with growing socioeconomic inequality and environmental violations, Prof. K. Purushotham Reddy rallied people and waged many grassroots campaigns that successfully led to positive outcomes. He gained hundreds of supporters, including many of you reading this, for taking small but meaningful actions, over the years. He filed public interest petitions, encouraged others to do so, exhorted students to come out of their classes and understand the real world, motivated his colleagues to become part of his campaigns, and enthused people.
With mandates from local villagers, farmers and people in general, Prof. Purushotham Reddy mounted pressure of policy makers to perform. He mobilized people innovatively, without any monetary investment, with ease, in a country where political parties spend lakhs of rupees to bring people to their meetings. He often talked about the technology of protest, honed by him over years.
Prof. Reddy is a man of ideas, especially as concerned environmental activist. At heart Prof. Reddy is a lover of nature in all its forms, including human nature. He was not only a freethinker and an experimental campaigner, but was always concerned to bring back democracy and public interest to the fore. His determination, despite odds, and limited resources, led him to produce several variations on his idea of democratic protests, and when his ideas finally led to success he was unabashed in expressing his happiness.
While Prof. Reddy always valued institutional integrity, he did not deem it necessary to personalize the system of campaigns. He valued real scholarship and intellectual honesty. Prof. Reddy was always collegial and open-minded, valuing different viewpoints and interested in new inputs. Over the years he worked with many colleagues to refine and rework his outline based on experiment and result. He never resorted to a fixed dogmatism, but remained interested in real effects in the real world.
Under his leadership, students and various individuals participated in various struggles to protect and conserve environment. His name and ideas will be remembered in Telangana. We’ll remember with affection his humor and wisdom, his compassion and his effort. We’ll remember
