Introduction

H ow do I get my first client? Where can I even get started with finding them? What can I do to get real results with my marketing efforts?

These are questions I get asked constantly. For good reason, too: I’ve been freelancing for more than a decade. Over the years, I’ve published quite a few blog posts on the subject at SaganMorrow.com. So, whenever new and aspiring freelancers send me these questions, I go through my blog archives and select specific articles for their unique situation.

...And after doing this over and over and over again, I realized that I could save myself a lot of time—plus make it much easier for new freelancers to access the information—if I just compiled a short e-book featuring all of the most relevant blog posts in one place.

That’s what led to this book!

Here, you’ll find step-by-step guides for how to identify your ideal client, create a marketing strategy, sort through different business promotion ideas, and actively pitch clients.

This book assumes you already have your business idea, and it does not include information on pricing services or what to do after you have your first few clients. I have many other resources on those topics, however I wanted this book to be super focused on one thing: how to get your first freelance client.

Don’t worry—if you have questions about those other areas of freelancing, I’ve included additional resources to provide you with some answers. Consider this book as the starting point for getting ready to find clients. If you want to take things to the next level after that, then you will find the other resources I mention in this book to be exactly what you need.

Let’s get started with finding your first freelance client...

Chapter 1: Identify Your Ideal Client

Before you begin marketing your services as a freelancer, you need to know who it is you’re trying marketing to... and that means identifying your ideal client.

A big mistake too many business owners make is to begin promoting themselves and their work, without considering who they’re trying to target. Without having an ideal client in mind, you can’t be strategic about the way you talk about your services, and you won’t be able to reach out
