Montana, 1996...
Mama, please tell me that story you told me last Christmas Eve,
Reade asked. Read me the one about the Starry-Eyed Donkey.
Reade Werner,
his mother said sternly. You know it’s late and Santa will not come if you’re still up.
He pouted and rubbed his eyes fighting his weariness. Pleeease,
he begged.
She sighed and relented. All right,
she sat next to him on the bed. But I’ll bet you a gingerbread cookie that you are asleep before I finish.
She smiled, puffed up his pillow and with a loving hug his mother opened the book and read, A long time ago there was a man named Ishmael who owned six strong donkeys that carried water in a pail. The animals hauled fresh water from a well every day for the people who could afford a coin to pay. Ishmaels strongest were Gabriel, Hercules, and Samson, they were his only males until Ruth delivered a son. She named him Simon; he was her precious boy and he grew-up giving her so much joy.
She squeezed him said, Just like you, my precious boy. Now, Simon liked to gaze at the moon and stars at night and wished on the stars that shone so bright. Although Simon was not big like the other males he did his job and carried water in his pails. But, he was different from all the other donkeys, he longed to travel and see different countries.
Like me mama, I want to travel too.
Yes dear, like you but his mother was becoming quite worrisome and had to scold and warn her starry-eyed son. Simon, Ishmael is becoming quite annoyed with you and he is threatening to make you into donkey stew.
Yuck!
Reade made a face and asked, Who would eat donkey stew?
I’m sure Ishmael wasn’t serious honey and no more interruptions,
she tapped his freckled nose and continued, Now Simon, said his mother, all the other donkeys are laughing at you and making fun because of your daydreaming and that must stop my son! He promised his mother he’d no longer gaze into the sky and sadly walked away hating the fact that he told a lie. He could not stop his longing and his wish to roam even if he had to leave his mother and his only home. As days went by he tried to ignore the teasing. Simon is a poor excuse for a donkey, Ester giggled. He thinks he’s better than us to travel and see the country. Yeah, he’s foolish, snorted another female named Clair. It can be dangerous; who knows what’s out there. Humph! Simon scoffed and said, laugh all you want but you see carrying water to people for coins every day and that is not for me. I’m going to be somebody and never stop dreaming of better things. Who knows what wonders are out there, what adventure brings.
Good for him,
Reade yawned, he didn’t let them get under his hide.
"Yes dear, he was strong but now the days grew shorter and stars seemed brighter this time of the year. It was a time when the air smelled fresh, crisp and clear. He wondered what the earth looked like from way up there. What was beyond the clouds, beyond the atmosphere? He continued to daydream as time passed and days grew cold. Ishmael decided it was time for the starry-eyed donkey to be sold. One day a couple came by looking to purchase a beast. It was Ishmael’s chance to get rid of the one he valued the least. Simon kissed his sad mother good-bye but he was happy to go, this was no lie. This
