About this ebook
Paasch's stated intention to describe a ship literally From Keel to Truck” has been widely applauded as has his inclusion of the equivalent terms in French and German alongside the English. Each section is accompanied by dozens of high-quality line engravings to accompany the text and illustrate the terminology and concept described. First published in 1885, and an invaluable resource ever since, Captain Paasch’s dictionary is both a full encyclopedia and an unequaled introduction for anyone interested in steam and sailing ships, life aboard a ship, engineering, or simply understanding the language.

PREFACE.
__________
Thirty-five years of continuous practice, including the Command, and subsequently the Superintendence of the construction and repairs of steam and sailing vessels, as Surveyor to such an eminent Institution as Lloyd’s Register
; aided by an acquaintance with several languages, offer fair credentials of the Author’s competency to write on matters with which he is so conversant.
His attention has been frequently drawn to the need of an efficient guide on a subject that is scarcely paralleled in the extent and variety of details; viz: Ships, with their Equipment, Machinery, Inventory etc. etc.
The work on inspection will be found complete up to the present date, so far at least as assiduous care can ensure the production of a trustworthy book of reference for its special department, and fulfil the promise of its comprehensive title From Keel to Truck,
but it will be considered a favour if any deficiencies are pointed out.
However complete the list of terms may be, the names alone, would fail to give non-professionals any correct idea of the true position of any particular part.
It is for this purpose, that the numerous Illustrations are inserted; not as master-pieces of designs, but simply to show as clearly as possible in small compass, all the principal portions of a ship’s structure and equipment.
The labour of collecting and classifying such a multitude of terms was of course great, but the chief difficulty was to convert them with technical accuracy in English, French, and German; on this very important point the Author believes that his work will be found particularly correct.
He is indebted to several of his friends, who in their various capacities combined the requisite qualifications to render him assistance; to each of them his sincerest thanks are here tendered.
The thoroughness of the work encourages the hope that it will meet with a favourable reception; for a conscientious endeavour has been made to convey clearly, all the information on the subject that personal experience, professional knowledge, and exhaustive enquiry could furnish.
THE AUTHOR.
Antwerp, April 1885.
PRÉFACE.
__________

NOTE.
NOTE.
NOTA
.
An inspection of the Book will show that great care has been expended upon the classification of its contents, but in a work of this kind it was difficult to confine all the details under arbitrary headings; this however will cause no inconvenience, since the completeness of each Index removes every difficulty in finding whatever may be required.
_____________________
While in the press, altho’ sometimes too late for insertion in the proper place, expressions more in use, were found for some terms; and a few new words occurred; these, with any typographical errors, will appear under Additions and Corrections
in the Appendix.
_____________________
Fuller explanations of several terms being deemed necessary, the Author’s remarks upon such items will also be found in the Appendix.
