By Elisa Gaudet and Ernie Els
()
About this ebook
The book helps answer the questions posed to the athletes regarding how they got started playing golf; what their favorite course is; their best memories and golf shot; favorite charity golf events they play in or host; favorite drink; and much more.
Golf is an international sport and one where people often get together and socialize during a round and after. The book, like a great nineteenth hole or favorite clubhouse, is a way to share golf memories with family and friends. This book is a tribute to the great international athletes and their love of golf.

Two Good Rounds Superstars - Elisa Gaudet
Michael Phelps
SWIMMING
Michael Phelps, an American swimmer, is the most decorated Olympian of all time, having tallied a total of twenty-two medals. Phelps also holds the all-time record for Olympic gold medals, with eighteen. Phelps took the record for the most first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games when he won eight gold medals in 2008.
HANDICAP
The max, ha-ha.
FIRST INTRODUCTION TO GOLF
I played a little bit with my friends, but because of my intense swimming schedule, I never had time to concentrate on golf. In 2010, I did travel to China and had my first lesson from Hank Haney at Mission Hills; it was then that I realized how much work my golf game needed! Golf is one of the most humbling games I’ve tried to do in my entire life.
FAVORITE COURSE(S)
I’ve been really lucky to play so many incredible courses while filming The Haney Project—courses in China, Cabo, the Bahamas, etc. My favorite so far is the Old Course and Kingsbarns Golf Links in Scotland.
BEST GOLF MEMORIES
I’ll never forget playing in the Pro-Am at the Ryder Cup; there were so many people there watching and everyone was cheering loudly. It was so cool to see spectators dressed in red, white, and blue, and some children were even wearing swim caps while watching me play. The Ryder Cup creates such a unique environment; it’s really hard to beat.
I also played in the Phoenix Open Pro-Am with Bubba Watson, and I’ve never been so nervous as I was playing the 16th hole with that many people watching. When I walked up, everyone starting chanting U-S-A, which was very memorable!
My most memorable golf shot was when I sunk a 159-foot putt at Kingsbarns, recording the longest-ever televised putt. That was crazy—obviously one of the biggest highlights of my golfing experience. I wasn’t expecting it to go in when I hit, I was just trying to get it up close to the pin so I’d have a makeable birdie putt. As the ball was making its way toward the hole, I could see that it was on a good line, had good speed, and as it got closer and closer I started thinking it might have a chance. And when it did, it was a total rush, as you can probably tell from my reaction with the fist pump. I’m hopeful that there will be many more great shots in my future!
HOW DOES GOLF COMPARE TO SWIMMING
I’m not sure how much swimming helps with golf; in golf, you’re trying to stay out of the water! However, I am a very competitive person, and I think that helps in everything I do. I like to think that I have a pretty good mental approach to things, which was a big factor in my success in the pool. Now I am trying to apply that same attitude toward golf.
ONE GOLF TIP
Just one? While filming The Haney Project, Hank gave me so much insight and knowledge about the game and the mechanics of a good swing. One area I have been working on is swinging the club faster and making sure I swing all the way through the ball. I’ve had a tendency to slow down after hitting the ball, so I am working on my follow-through to make sure I complete my swing.
ONE LIFE TIP
I always tell people to Dream, Plan, Reach.
It’s important to come up with a dream and a plan for how you’re going to reach it. It’s important that children know anything is possible!
FAVORITE CHARITY GOLF EVENTS
The Michael Phelps Foundation hosts an annual golf classic, which is the largest annual fund-raising event for my foundation’s programs (www.michaelphelpsfoundation.org). It’s always a memorable weekend and raises awareness and funds to support the Foundation’s mission of promoting healthy and active lives, especially for children, primarily by expanding their opportunities in the sport of swimming.
DREAM FOURSOME
For the season finale of The Haney Project, I got to play with Olympic legends; Mike Eruzione, Sugar Ray Leonard, Bruce Jenner, and Seth Wescott … what a memorable day! And of course, who doesn’t have Michael Jordan in their dream foursome?
FAVORITE 19TH HOLE DRINK
A cold beer.
FAVORITE COUNTRY CLUB GRILL ROOM / 19TH HOLE
Anyone who has played at El Dorado knows that the comfort stations are impossible to beat … no need to wait until the end to enjoy food and drinks!
HOLE IN ONE
I have never gotten a hole in one … but I hope to soon!
Ray Allen
BASKETBALL
Ray Allen currently plays for the Miami Heat. The ten-time NBA All-Star previously played for three other teams and has won two NBA championships. He was also a member of the 2000 US Men’s Basketball Team, which won the Olympic gold
