About this ebook
The coroner's jury found that the boy hanged in the school gymnasium had killed himself, but Sergeant Beef disagrees. He takes a job as a temporary school caretaker, abetted by the reluctant Townsend, Beef's biographer, whose brother is a master at the school. Beef's methods entail endless games of darts and beer all around in the local pub, much to Townsend's dismay of course. But when another remarkably similar murder occurs elsewhere, Beef bestirs himself to uncover the guilty.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Fiction, Detective and mystery stories, Sergeant Beef series, In Case with Ropes and Rings Sergeant Beef describes his method of detection: "I don't do a lot of skylarking with microscopes and that, and I have no opinion at all of what they call psychology. I just use my loaf." ; First published by Nicholson & Watson, London, 1940, First US edition, Academy Chicago Limited, 1980, 192 pp.; First Italian edition, Milano, Mondadori, 1986, under the title: "Il sergente Beef fa quadrato", Leo Bruce is the pen name of Rupert Croft Cooke (1903 - 1979), a British writer
