About this ebook

Provoke is a poetic translation of changes. Gadou attempts to comprehend what it means to be overwhelmed, translating stimulus into bite-sized metaphors. Gadou hopes the reader leaves Provoke with an innate desire to self-explore, and eventually: heal.

    boy blows out 6 candles

resides inside the corners of his toy car

builds make-believe roadblocks on the carpets

cries when it does not get through

    boy blows out 16 candles

    saves rain for summer

he is asked to turn frustration to muscle

    left jab to hustle

so he writes about skirt rustles

about provoking eyes and smoked muzzles

    boy blows out 66 candles

decides to untie the knots in his jawlines

    slips his tongue to sleep

safely beneath the shade, he exhales timidly

    thanks his teeth for clenching

for unwinding with the wind chimes bending

the bleak beneath his eyes is choked

the empty ground swallows the smoke

    the ground is full

    no longer provoked

    1

    I AM

not what a pen can endure

not what your parameters can secure

not the simple definitions or the complex brochures

    I AM

    storm

    stirred within a breeze

    gentle as the ocean debris

    I AM

    5 am

stalling for breath and not counting backward from ten

    I AM

    the streets of Cairo

    noisy and doubtful

more than just a mouthful of prison cells and obituaries

cold, in a handful of hands discovering hope in sanctuaries

    old but proud and ironic

    I AM

    outrageous and hyperbolic

    ready to verbally out-stake you

    mis-take you for lobotomy

    I AM

    the night in its silence

the wandering mongrel of this city

    screaming unfiltered monstrosity

advertising the struggle of the unheard

    to the unburdened herd

    dispersed in gluttony

    I AM

rising prices and falling dice in

    scalps of lies and

    born with might and

    tired of fighting

    in snow and ice

    with goddamn ISIS

    I AM

    koshari and spice and

    everything nice

    I AM

the serial killer with pen and greed

    I AM

the blast outcast outlasting the hurricane

the last king of Scotland more blunt than Mary Jane

    more do than die

    more hello than goodbye

    more try
