LA GUIDA

Italian Wines is now on its 32nd edition. The first was assembled by a handful of wine lovers over the course of one summer in 1987. It was a difficult moment for Italian wine, but it was also a decade rich in innovation, the period of the Italian wine renaissance. Since then we’ve gone from reviewing 500 wineries and 1500 wines to more than 2500 producers and more than 23,000 wines. More than 70 fantastic tasters make up the motivated, skilled team that we’ve built over the years and that help us evaluate more than 40,000 wines in every region of Italy (even Ticino). It’s an increasingly rich panorama made up of thousands of different territories and thousands more grapes, where it’s possible to find wines made according to the latest methods, as well as age-old materials, like stone or terra-cotta, whose use goes back 2500 years.

How do we go about judging the wines? What are the parameters according to which we decide if a wine is good, very good or excellent (using our one, two or three ‘Bicchieri’ system). There’s not a single answer or an easy way to sum up the complexity of our approach, considering Italy’s fascinating panorama of wine and tremendous diversity (biodiversity, as it’s commonly known today). Our criteria is probably at once hedonistic, humanistic and cultural. Our tastings are blind (bottles are covered), but we’re not trying to identify a single score as much as relate to our readers how much we enjoyed a specific wine. It’s a ‘hedonistic’ criteria inasmuch as there are moments when the maturity of a wine’s tannins, or the freshness of its acidity are as important as a vintner’s story. Don’t forget that we are relating history here, the infinite history of Italian wine, which is the most complex, difficult and multi-layered on this splendid blue planet. But there are times when the palate wins out over technical skill, poetry over reason, because Italy holds a place for the artisan who makes 30,000 bottles a year, as well as the large producer who exports the world over.

Why do we award a wine from a certain vintage or vineyard with Tre Bicchieri when a neighboring producer can have the same vineyard position and grapes but only arrives in our finals? In our opinion scientific and technical explanations don’t provide a complete picture of what happens in the vineyard and the cellar. The difference between a good wine and a great one at times (and often) depends on myriad variables that are difficult to quantify. And so, once again, what matters is our immediate perception, our emotions in that particular moment. It’s useless to say that more than 30 years of experience represents a unique, non-replicable feat that allows us to intercept newsworthy events, trends, new terroir, and communicate this all to the world as it’s happening. And we should add that we’re not slaves of a single vision either. Indeed, we’re fascinated by the complexity and range of approaches and styles that our multivariate terroir and grapes are able to express, thanks to the talent of our national vine growers. With this in mind, you can get a sense of how our tasters work.

Thirty-two editions of Italian Wines, now translated in English, German, Chinese and Japanese, testify to how well our commitment has been received in Italy and throughout the world. Being in the guide, and receiving Tre Bicchieri, is by now a universal ‘benchmark’, an obligatory achievement that continues to favor Italian wines across the globe. We’d add that every year we’re part of more than 50 international events, in both established and emerging markets, telling the stories of Italian wines both big and small, as well as their artificers. We meet with consumers, the press, sommeliers, importers and distributers. Our team has managed to build an important instrument for a fundamental part of our economy, one that has earned undisputed international credibility and consensus, and of this we’re truly proud.

Our special awards are a snapshot of our vision of Italian wine, as well as a summary of the work done over the course of a year.

Our ‘Red of the Year’ is Tenuta di Sesta’s 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Duelecci Ovest Riserva, a wine of extraordinary elegance that caps off a fantastic year for Montalcino. Our ‘White of the Year’ is Silvio Jermann’s extraordinarily elegant 2016 Capo Martino, which managed to beat out a particularly strong in-house competitor in their 2016 Vintage Tunina. Our ‘Sparkler of the Year’ is Guido Berlucchi’s 2011 Franciacorta Nature 61, a fitting award for a producer that literally ‘created’ Franciacorta almost 60 years ago. Our ‘Sweet of the Year’ is Vite Colte’s sumptuous 2016 Moscato Passito La Bella Estate. And this year we’ve got some big news: we’ve added a new special award dedicated to a wine that’s taking off in Italy and throughout the world, ‘Rosé of the Year’. The first ever goes to Costaripa’s 2015 Valtènesi Chiaretto Molmenti, a wine that, thanks to the work of Mattia Vezzola (its artificer) opens up new stylistic prospects for our national rosés.

The Lunelli family’s Ferrari is our ‘Winery of the Year’ for the excellent quality of its cuvées, but also for the strong results turned in by the group’s other producers. Our ‘Best Value for Money’ award goes to Cantina Kaltern’s 2017 Lago di Caldaro Classico Superiore Quintessenz, a wine that’s simply irresistible. Francesco Cambria, who gave up his suit so as to dedicate his heart and soul to a group of vineyards on Mt. Etna, is our ‘Grower of the Year’. And our ‘Up-and-Coming Winery’ award goes to Serdiana’s Antonella Corda. Thanks to an extraordinary 2016 Cannonau di Sardegna, a wine that literally enchants, they were chosen from a group of 54 producers who received Tre Bicchieri for the first time. Our ‘Award for Sustainable Viticulture’ goes to Torrevento, who have been working for years on behalf of a sector that’s critical to our future, while our ‘Solidarity Award’ goes to San Patrignano, a choice that requires no further comment.

You’ll also find our Tre Bicchieri Verdi in green, those wines made by certified organic or biodynamic producers (there are some 102 this year). Finally, we also make note of those wines awarded that can be bought for €15 or less (there are 92 in all, more than 20% of the wines awarded).

We would like to thank the Bolzano EOS Chamber of Commerce, the Oltrepò Pavese District of Quality Wine, the coordinators of the Umbria Olive Oil and Wine Road, the Arezzo Wine Road, the Marche Institute for Jesi Wine (IMT) and VINEA of Offida, ERSA Friuli Venezia Giulia, Brescia Wine Association, The Carcare Training Consortium (Savona), Committee for the Tuscan Coast’s Great Cru, Assovini Sicilia, the E. del Giudice Viticultural Innovation Centre in Marsala. We’d also like to thank the following protection consortiums: Gavi, Barolo, Barbaresco, Alba, Langhe and Roero, Wines of the Colli Tortonesi, Nebbiolo dell’Alto Piemonte, Caluso, Carema and Canavese, Valtellina, Oltrepò Pavese, Franciacorta, Valcalepio, Mantova Wines, Lugana, Valtenesi, Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Soave, Valpolicella, the Trento Wine Consortium, the Lambrusci Modenesi Historic Wines Consortium, as well as Lambrusco di Modena, Bolgheri, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Chianti Rufina, Morellino di Scansano, Vini della Maremma Toscana, Montecucco, Carmignano, Orvieto, Montefalco, the Piceno Wines Consortium and, finally, the DOC Sicilia Wines Consortium.

We’d also like to thank the Enoteca Regionale of Lombardy (Cassino Po), Roero and Nizza Monferrato, Canelli and Astesana, the Cantina Comunale I Söri in Diano d’Alba, the Bottega del Vino in Dogliani, Carpe Diem restaurant in Montaione, Calidario in Venturina, Tenuta Il Sassone in Massa Marittima, the City of Taste in Rome and Naples, the Enoteca Regionale of Basilicata in Venosa, Caneva in Mogliano Veneto, Da Nando restaurant in Mortegliano, Casa e Putia restaurant in Messina and, for Ticino, the Restaurant/winery Zoccolino in Bellinzona.

Finally, a sincere thanks to all our team, who showed true devotion in helping us realize Italian Wines, from local tastings to drafting the profiles, all the way to editing the volume itself, and to all those we’ve worked with down through the years. A special thanks to Danilo Zannella, director of all our tastings.

TRE BICCHIERI VERDI

With our Tre Bicchieri Verdi we make note of those wines made with certified organic or biodynamically cultivated grapes (here indicated in red). This year there were a record 102 in all, a figure that also represents a growing share of those wines awarded (23%). It’s an important figure that testifies to the fact that an emphasis on ecology among Italy’s best wineries is irreversible (it’s a complex question, however, considering that many wineries work according to similar methods but never request certification). Finally, it’s clear that sustainability is an increasingly widespread priority among winemakers. We use the label ‘Sustainable Winery’ to identify producers committed to such principles.

Valle d'Aosta

Aosta Valley remains a somewhat marginal wine producing region in Italy, with an average production volume of about two million liters. That is, if everything were to get bottled, it would amount to just over two and a half million bottles, significantly less than the largest national producers. What makes Aosta Valley truly unique is its geography. From Donnas to Courmayeur, it’s impossible to find two territories that are alike. More than anything, the region offers a wide variety of cultivar, with native grapes and non-native varieties perfectly complementing one another. Among the reds, their succulent and powerful Syrahs and Fumins alternate with more multifaceted and delicate Pinot Noirs and Petit Rouges. Among the whites we see fresh Prié Blancs and Petite Arvines (a grape that’s on the rise) serving as a counterpoint to more buttery Chardonnays and Malvoisies (Pinot Grigio). Its great variety comes from the enormous variability of its microclimates, brought about by the position of its vineyards (Envers is situated on the right bank of the Dora Baltea, with northeastern exposure, while Adret is the hotter and more well-suited area situated on the left bank, with southern or western exposure), their terrain and especially their elevation, with vineyards planted anywhere from 300 to over 1100 meters above sea level. This richness and variability represents the small region’s true distinctive quality. After 2017, which was disastrous from a climatic point of view, the valley’s vigneron are slowly recovering. After 2016 registered 2.1 million liters, 2017 saw just 1 million - that’s a loss of 53%. We send out our encouragement to Blanc di Morgex et de La Salle, which saw an entire season of work go up in smoke. Some producers registered losses of 98%. In the 2019 edition of Italian Wines no new wineries from the region received awards but our tastings did see Anselmet back on top with their splendid selection of Chardonnay. The final count? Two Chardonnays, two Petite Arvines, a Fumin and a Moscato Passito. The nice surprise this year lies in the slow revival of Bassa Valle and Donnas, two areas we’ll be sure to hear more from soon.

Giorgio Anselmet’s winery is situated in the prized winemaking territory of Torette, along the road leading to Monte Bianco. Here the Aosta Valley’s traditional red wine is made according to tradition. Giorgio is a great interpreter of both the area’s native cultivar and international varieties, such that Chardonnay serves the producer’s cornerstone. His wines keep getting better, thanks to a recipe that brings together modern techniques and technology with the tradition that Renato, his father, was able to pass down.

Their latest Chardonnay earns a Tre Bicchieri, with its aromas of vanilla and acacia blossom, aromatic herbs and apricot. It’s a wine of great structure and balance, intense and truly long. Their Semel Pater is also noteworthy. A wine of impenetrable color, the nose is spicy and fruity, while the palate is potent. Their traditional Pinot Nero offers up fruity notes of wild strawberries and spices, with a truly full palate. Their Fumin also deserves mentioning.

Maurizio Fiorano doesn’t need much introduction. Among the Aosta Valley’s major wine producers he’s one who’s made his mark. Year after he year, he keeps improving the quality of his wines, which are made in one the region’s best areas, northern Asta. Here the slopes have southern exposure, perfect both for white and red grapes. Most of his vineyards host native cultivar, but there have been successful experiments with international varieties as well. Once again, Maurizio didn’t disappoint our expectations, with wines that delight the senses.

Their Torrette Supérieur is a wine that exhibits typicity. Ruby red in color, it’s redolent of dried prunes, while the palate is rich and pulpy, with slightly rough tannins, but it’s long as well. Their Syrah delights the nose with its flowery aromas that call up violet, then fruit, giving way to a slightly vegetal finish. It shows good length on the palate. Their Fumin, a vibrant ruby garnet wine, offers up intense notes of raspberry, while the palate still needs some aging. Their Cornalin is a characteristic wine.

Chambave is a village just outside Aosta and its cooperative winery, Crotta di Vegneron, is one of the territory’s most important. Some 120 grower members cover just over 40 hectares of small plots, all cultivated with passion and respect for tradition, but also under the agronomic guidance of the winery. Founded in 1980 (with the first bottles coming in 1985), from the beginning they’ve made wines with native grape varieties, Fumin, Cornalin, Vien de Nus and Petit Rouge, and local Moscato (a cultivar already appreciated at the time of the Savoias).

Their Chambave passito is an appealing, straw-yellow and gold wine with pleasant aromas of yellow flowers and dried grapes. In the mouth it proves balanced and long. Their ruby garnet Syrah offers up vibrant aromas of black fruit, while its faint, vegetal sensations harmonize with spicy and delicate notes of wood. Their Moscato di Chambave leaves you with classic sensations, fruit with pleasant, tropical aromas that hover around varietal fragrances. of musk, which carry through fresh and elegant on the palate.

SUSTAINABLE WINERY

Costantino Charrère is one of the Aosta Valley’s vine growing patriarchs. In his new cellar in Aymavilles, accompanied by his wife, Eleonora, and his collaborator in enology, Rafaela Crotta, he manages this solid winery of both national and international renown. His vineyards, which were hit by a brutal frost in 2017, host an array of grapes ranging from native cultivar like Petite Arvine, Petit Rouge and Fumin, and international varieties like Pinot Nero and Chardonnay (the last of which serves as the winery’s flagship). They’ve also had excellent results with Nebbiolo, which is getting increasing attention of late.

Once again their Chardonnay Cuvée Bois earns a Tre Bicchieri by virtue of its wide range of aromas. Vibrant notes of fruit close with a delicately spicy nuance, while in the mouth it’s long and balanced. Their Nebbiolo Sommet also did very well, with its aromas of pleasant floral complexity giving way to notes of raspberry, harmonized by quinine and licorice. It’s a fine, long wine. Their Syrah, Neige d’Or and Fumin also proved excellent.

Upon entering the Aosta Valley some of the first vineyards you’ll see are those of Donnas, with the Cave Cooperatives integrated in the fabric of the town’s small urban center. Here vine growing traditions are deeply tied to those of nearby Piedmont. Indeed, the primary grape cultivated in the surrounding area is Nebbiolo (locally known as Picotendro or Picutener). The cooperative is masterfully managed by Mario Dalbar who, in recent years, has managed to maintain quality and that character that the territory’s wines have always expressed. His success if pointed up by the fact that in 1971 Donnas was named the Aosta Valley’s first appellation (now a subzone of the region’s DOC controlled appellation).

The quality of Donnas’ wine is a constant over time. Their 2014 Vieilles Vignes is pleasant on the nose, with spicy hints of new wood and aromas of red fruit, as well as a strong accent of raspberry. It’s also unusually fresh in the mouth. In short, it’s a modern wine. Their Donnas, which features a lovely, ruby garnet color, is pleasant on the nose, with notes of tobacco and rhubarb standing out. In the mouth it’s marked by a long, fine finish. Their Napoléon is also worth nothing, with its hints of medicinal herbs and red fruit, as well as it’s crisp, long palate.

Gressan is a small municipality just outside Aosta. Over the town stands a mountain that, as legend has it, is the pinky finger of the giant Gargantua. It was here, along these slopes, that the Cuneaz brothers’ passion for wine was kindled. To quote Laurent, ‘Here my grandfather passed down his love of the land, showing me how important time dedicated to the vineyard is.’ The Cuneaz family is strongly attached to (and respectful of) the territory, its tradition, as well as the Aosta Valley’s culture and customs. Through this lens this small producer gives rise to their entire selection.

Their Torrette Supérieur is a truly interesting wine with aromas of red berries and tobacco. On the palate it proves extraordinarily elegant and balanced. Their Impasse is a notable blend in which fruity notes harmonize with spices and a final hint of licorice. Their Daphne exhibits pleasant complexity, with aromas of vanilla and white fruit. Their Spillo d’Oro is a new botrytised wine. It’s good but still not balanced.

Introd is a small town just outside Aosta, on the road that takes you to the region’s great mountains. Marco Martin’s vineyards are situated right here, with Pinot Grigio taking center stage. Attentive to local customs and traditions, he’s managed to make wines using the Aosta Valley’s celebrated local cultivar in a modern way, even if international varieties also find a place in his selection (especially Syrah). In recent years the estate has seen major renovations, first the vineyards and then the cellar, and Marco has just finished work on his reception space and gorgeous tasting area.

Their vibrantly colored Fumin is rich on the notes with aromas of red and black fruit and spicy hints. Cocoa and tobacco confer complexity, giving way to a rich, pulpy palate. Their Pinot Gris is truly delicious, vibrant and elegant in its fragrances of white fruit, with pineapple and pear standing out. The palate is balanced and well-structured. Their Petite Arvine is interesting, with its notes of fresh fruit and citrus, as well as its balanced palate. Their Pinot Grigio, which is matured in barriques, is also a quality wine.

Blanc de Morgex is a regional cultural patrimony. Here Prie Blanc (still ungrafted) takes center stage across Europe’s highest appellation, with the grapes clinging onto the slopes of Monte Bianco. It was Don Bougeat who began work in 1989, and today the producer continues to bring renown to all of the Valdigne; vintages alternate, but their consistence quality terms is ever more solid. A particularly complex season lowered the vineyards’ yields, allowing for a limited selection, but in their quaint Morgex winery, made with wood and stone, the work continues with rugged tenacity.

Out tastings concerned Cave’s sparkling wines, all Metodo Classicos. Their Cuvée Prince features fine perlage and vibrant fragrances redolent of bread crust. It’s a fruity wine with hints of damson that proves elegant and long on the palate. Their Extra Brut offers up a rich nose that’s pleasant in its hints of yeast, biscuits and sensations of honey. In the mouth it’s fresh and savory. Their Blanc du Blanc is a taut, vibrant wine with hints of white fruit. Their Glacier features long perlage, aromas of yeast and ripe white fruit, and a close-focused, fresh palate.
