They call it the aquarium. Alex explained. She was sitting with Elizabeth next to a clear wall that gave a view of what was underneath the ocean. They were at a table in a diner style restaurant waiting for food to arrive. I like the view sometimes. Then she smiled, I also like sharing the view with visitors.

I was never told they made this section of the Imperial city in my briefing. Elizabeth admitted, looking outside. Currently there was no aquatic life in view, but her eyes were fixated on the wall. I knew they built underneath the city to anchor it.

Are you getting used to it yet? Alex asked with another smile, she laughed lightly after her question.

Used to the view? It’s easy enough to adjust. Elizabeth answered matter of factly.

I meant Rukast. Imperials from other planets that come here? We have stereotypes about them. Alex explained. You’re used to everything being by the book, standard Imperial designs. We joke about how you’re all rigid in your thinking. You assume things here work the way they do everywhere else.

Other planets have variations as well, and this isn’t my first assignment. Elizabeth protested.

Alex laughed again, this time louder. That’s exactly what they all say, too! she was clearly amused. We’ve seen variations before! Then the laughing stopped and she lowered her voice, What I mean is this place developed without the Empire or its technology. Rather, the Empire showed up pretty late to the party. When they did show up, proclaim Rukast was under Imperial control, and declare the Mars Decrees were in effect just about every country and military stifled laughter and nodded.

So that’s how it is. Elizabeth responded, her voice now subdued by the explanation Alex provided.

I’m an Imperial, but I’ve lived here long enough. I haven’t been everywhere, but I get requests for consults in various places often. Then Alex laughed again, offering another smile, Whoever pays me? They’re always unhappy I refuse to be exclusive with them, but they can live with it.

You’re not saying you assist them with their violations are you?
