    What Is A Pressure Cooker?

A pressure cooker is a cooking device that cooks food faster using steam pressure. This pressure forces heat into your food, cooking it rapidly and making it moist and tender. This cooking technique was discovered as early as the 1600s when a Frenchman called Denis Papin was experimenting with cooking with pressure and steam.  Over the years as technology improved, the pressure cooker has evolved into a safer and easier cooking appliance.

The advent of the electric pressure cooker has further eased the pressure of cooking with a pressure cooker. The electronic functions like the timer, digital display, cooking modes and the pressure control button make cooking with the electric pressure cooker a child's play. It also comes with some safety features like the safety lock which prevents the lid from opening before the pressure is released and temperature/pressure sensor controls.

The electric pressure cooker is a versatile kitchen gadget that can perform various cooking tasks like sautéing foods, making yogurt, cooking rice, making soups, steaming vegetables, browning foods and even slow cooking. In fact, you can use this device to prepare almost any meal once you know how to operate it properly. For this, you'll need to consult the user's manual that came with your device.

Parts and Functions of the Electric Pressure Cooker

Many people are scared of using the pressure cooker because they believe it's dangerous and think it might blow up at anytime in their kitchen. That's definitely untrue! The electric pressure cooker is very safe and user friendly once you know how to operate it. Yes, it has some functions that the conventional cooking gadgets don't have but once you get a hand of it, you will never want to cook another meal without it.

Here are a few terms you need to know before using the pressure cooker.

    1.  Natural release: This is a way of releasing pressure automatically from the pressure cooker after you are done cooking.  All you need to do is stop cooking and allow the pressure drop gently, by itself.  This may take about tem to fifteen minutes depending on the heat initially used.

    2. Quick release: This involves releasing the pressure at once after cooking by raising, pressing or turning the pressure release valve. This process of rapidly releasing steam takes only about a minute or two and is used for foods that require more time to cook.

    3. Pressure release valve: This is found on the lid of the pressure cooker and as the name implies, it is used to let pressure off after cooking. You need to be careful when turning, pressing or lifting the valve so as not to get burnt by the steam.

    4. Pressure indicator: This is a small pin that is situated on the lid of the electric pressure cooker. Its main function is to indicate the pressure of the cooker by moving up when the right pressure is reached and going down when the pressure drops.

    5. Silicone sealing ring: This is also known as the gasket ring and is found on the inner part of the lid. It ensures the pressure cooker is tightly sealed to prevents air or steam from escaping

    6. Steam condensation collector: This is usually a small plastic vessel attached to the electric cooker. It gathers extra condensation and stores it when cooking.

    7. Trivet and steam basket: These are used to prevent food from coming in contact with the base of the electric pressure cooker.

    8. Pressure level (high, medium and low pressure): The pressure you will use depends on what the recipe you are making requires. Consult your pressure cooker manual to know which pressure to use for which foods.

More sophisticated pressure cookers have specific buttons for specific foods making pressure cooking a lot easier.

    9. Manual: This button is usually used when entering customized settings from the beginning, adjusting the time and pressure as required.

    10. Slow cook: This button makes your electric pressure cooker to function like a slow cooker. You can leave your food cooking for long hours, but ensure the pressure release valve is on venting when using this.

    11. Sauté: This function is used to soften or brown meats or vegetables before they are pressure cooked. The sauté function can also be used to make sauces thick after pressure cooking. This makes the pressure cooker an efficient one-pot gadget. Always take off the lid when sautéing.

    12. Steam: When using this function, you'll need a steamer basket that fits well to your cooker or you can use the metal
