But then, one cold evening at the start of her third winter alone, she hears someone knocking on the door. It's James, but he is not the man she said goodbye to, three years ago. He seems distant and easily upset, he's lost a lot of weight, and he suffers from nightmares.

Can Martha cope with the sudden return of her husband after so long, especially when he seems to have changed so much? And when James reveals a secret to Martha that threatens their renewed life together, will their marriage be able to survive?

    Chapter 1: Winter Gales

The thin wooden walls of the farmhouse were creaking again this morning. Cold winds raged outside, a sign that autumn was leaving, and winter was following just behind. The bad weather made it all the more difficult for Martha to wake up and stand on her feet. The young woman, just turned thirty this year, wanted to spend the rest of her day in bed, together with a cup of hot tea and her favorite book. But, there was no time for slacking; the winter was just around the corner and the farm needed tending, just like any other day.

After mustering the appropriate strength to lift all those heavy covers, the first thing she noticed was the pitch black mess she called hair. The full body mirror that was positioned against her bed constantly reminded Martha that she was alone in this house; that she slept in that bed every night by herself.

She stood on her feet and made a quick turn in front of the wardrobe mirror. Still the same...nothing has changed. Martha was desperately looking for a sign of an emotion in her face, any emotion at all. But, it was already too late for that. The sun was getting high in the sky and she was sulking over a cold winter morning.

Her steps were steady and her back stiff while she was searching for the appropriate dress to keep her warm a windy day like this one. The black one, with the long sleeves will do. She pulled it out, and with sudden and quick moves, she got dressed. It was a habit she had developed, after leading the same hard life for the past three years—to never waste a move. Always accurate, always looking for the most practical solution.

Her hands moved behind her neck and gathered her hair into a top-knot bun, one that perfectly arranged her hair in a practical manner. The wind was still howling outside, but she didn’t hesitate for a moment. She moved downstairs and started preparing her breakfast.

Since after the war had started, the best she could do every day was to boil a glass of fresh milk that she had milked from the cow, and eat a couple slices of bread. It wasn’t anything special, but it was more than enough to keep her going for the rest of the morning.

Martha thought about the tasks that needed her attention throughout the day.

...feed the animals, water the plants, clean the barn, sort the supplies. Gather the eggs from the chicken coop, check the fence for any damage, and
