Chapter 1: When Time is not Enough

The small clock sitting on top of the black, metallic desk was ticking nervously. It was surprising how something so small could overshadow every other sound inside the small, cozy office. The voice of the patient talking, the hasty scribbling of the pen on the pocket size notebook, even her own thoughts were distracted by that ticking clock.

How many minutes until the session is over? How much more until she stops rambling? Discreetly, she turns her head only slightly to the side, peeking at the delicate hands of the clock.  I just have to hold on for another minute. One more minute and it’s over.

Mrs. Collier, are you listening to me? Elainne snapped out of her thoughts when the middle-aged woman sitting in front of her asked for her attention.

The patient, a woman with worn blonde hair, suddenly seemed ready to burst into tears. Elainne didn’t expect her words to have such a strong impact on her; on the other hand though, before she arrived in this town, people used to deal with their problems by just sweeping them under the carpet.

Nevertheless, since the beginning of their session, this was the first time that Elainne had actually felt connected with her patient. Thirty-seven years old, with two teenage sons, and a shattered marriage, she now wished she had followed her own advice back then. To trust and share – the first rule of married life.

Now, seeing a damaged woman before her savagely holding back her tears, she couldn’t help but feel like she was looking at her own reflection.

The patient plodded towards the exit. Elainne got on her feet and followed her. Don’t worry Mrs. Tritt. I’m sure that everything will be alright. Remember that your kids support you, and you also have your own self to take care of. Don’t neglect yourself over some marital dispute. See you next week.

After closing the door behind her, Elainne sighed. It was a weary sigh, one signaling a long day of
