Power Outage - Christianity Unplugged - Brian Johnston
CHAPTER ONE: DON’T PRAY
I’ve recently witnessed a remarkable and powerful work of God’s Spirit in a so-called developing country. I’ve seen people who lived in deep spiritual darkness being wonderfully enlightened and brought from darkness to light by the power of God’s Word as it broke Satan’s grip on them. Their shining faces said it all. Though barely literate in some cases, and from the flimsiest of huts standing among the rubber trees, they assembled around the Lord’s table to break bread for the first time on their own orange clay soil. Here were Christian brothers and sisters who during the previous sixteen months had been stunned to discover that the forgiveness of their sins is by God’s grace alone through their personal faith. We were never told this before!
they repeated. Brother after brother rose to his feet to exclaim thanks to God.
But I was also keenly aware that many all-night prayer meetings had gone into the founding of this church. It was this fact that reminded me again that little or nothing can be accomplished for God without prayer. Did not our Lord say: apart from Me you can do nothing
? (John 15:5). And when we ignore prayer it’s hard to defend the charge that we’re working apart from him. What deliverances and revivals we have forfeited at other times because we’ve not laid hold on God in earnest prayer! My basis for saying that comes from such a Bible text as: The people of the land have practiced oppression and committed robbery, and they have wronged the poor and needy and have oppressed the sojourner without justice. I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one. Thus I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their way I have brought upon their heads,
declares the Lord GOD" (Ezekiel 22:29-31).
One man was all that God was looking for! A single prayer intercessor! At that stage in their history, Israel needed a Moses-like figure. Centuries before, Moses had proved to be God’s appointed means, through intercessory prayer, for bringing about a relenting on God’s part that was nothing other than a gracious confirmation of his own covenant with Abraham. Back then, God had talked with Moses about destroying the people, but Moses had stood in the gap and selflessly pleaded God’s own previous promise to bless and not destroy them. Of course, it was God’s appointed will that judgement should fall in Ezekiel’s time, and so the prophet Jeremiah had been told not to pray for the people. In all this we’re reminded that intercessors are God’s appointed means to bring about God’s own appointed end.
What this further means is that effective prayer is going to be prayer that’s Bible-based. Such was the magnificent prayer of Daniel recorded in chapter 9 of his book:
In the first year of Darius ... I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the LORD to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years. So I gave my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer ... I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed and said,
Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, we have sinned...even turning aside from Your commandments ..." (Daniel 9:1-5).
Daniel went on to pour out his great confessional prayer, ending it like this:
... we have sinned, we have been wicked. O Lord, in accordance with all Your righteous acts, let now Your anger and Your wrath turn away from Your city Jerusalem ... listen to the prayer of Your servant ... and for Your sake, O Lord, let Your face shine on Your desolate sanctuary ... on account of Your great compassion ... O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name
(Daniel 9:16-19).
It was never in any doubt that this prayer would be answered; for it was completely in line with the will of God as found in the Word of God. Daniel had read the Bible prophet Jeremiah, understood God’s recovery timetable for his people, and then proceeded to plead for it to happen on time. And yet, equally, there was nothing routine or taken for granted about it. Instead, it’s a model of passionate, intercessory prayer: prayer that engages in a very real way with the sovereignty of God – with Daniel and his prayer cast together in the role of God’s appointed means working to God’s appointed end. And it’s the very same in the perhaps less than world- changing events of our own lives. As we find our delight in the Lord, it’s then he’ll give us the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37:4), and that’s because our heart’s desires have become the same as his desires as a result of our having delighted in God in the first place.
So effective prayer is about learning to delight in God and in the things which delight God. For example, Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 3:9 about rejoicing before God on account of the new Thessalonian converts. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves: do we find and experience joy in the very same things which bring joy to God? Paul was indeed doing that in the verse we’ve mentioned – as he was entering into the joy that exists in heaven over every sinner who repents. Appreciating our relationship with God as our heavenly father is of paramount importance in the time we spend in prayer (in
