See YOU at the TOP - Coach Obasi

    DEDICATION

To my brother Steve Miller who was with us for 31 years before he passed away from complications of Type 1 Diabetes. Watching him struggle to control his illness was painful and it’s because of him that I began a career in health and fitness. My mission is to help people learn to use exercise and nutrition to live healthy, productive, and meaningful lives.

    Preface

When I first thought about writing this book, I was a little skeptical about it. There are already countless fitness books out there written by people who have more experience and expertise than I do. I wanted to put together a simple guide to help people sort through all the confusing information and begin the journey to good health. I’ve worked as a personal trainer and nutrition coach for about 7 years at a commercial gym in St. Louis, Missouri. I’ve had the opportunity to train, advise, and help hundreds of people. I’ve learned a thing or two about working out, healthy eating, why some people reach their goals, and why others don’t.

Most of the people I’ve worked with don’t know it, but I’m a borderline diabetic. That means my blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to have full diabetes. At this point, I don’t take medication of any kind. I monitor my glucose levels, work out consistently, and watch my carb intake very closely. I have a family history of diabetes and high blood pressure, so I don’t take any of this lightly. I want to be as healthy as I can, for as long as I can. If you’re reading this and are dealing with an illness, hopefully you feel the same way.

I never imagined working as a fitness professional. I really fell into it. Before moving to St. Louis in 2011, I lived in New Jersey and worked for years as an elementary school teacher. I had a few other jobs, but nothing remotely related to fitness. Throughout the years, I played basketball, jogged, and did a ton of push-ups, but I never went to the gym consistently. Like many people, I’d exercise for a few months, and then drop off, but I’d always start up again out of the fear of gaining weight. The transition from educator to personal trainer was an easy one for me because the skill set is very similar. You must be an effective communicator, with an emphasis on being a good listener. You must motivate and inspire clients (students) to do things they don’t think they can do. I often tell people that I’m still a teacher, but instead of teaching children how to read and do math, I’m teaching adults about exercise and nutrition. To be successful with either group, you need passion and commitment.

Whether you’re new to fitness, or you’ve been working out for a while, I want you to succeed. I want you to lose the weight. I want you to get stronger and increase your endurance. I want you to feel better, look better, and be better. I want you to be more confident and knowledgeable about your body and your health. If you’re looking for practical exercise and nutrition information that (if utilized) will help you reach your goals, this book is for you!

    Introduction

After a long day at work, one of my clients came in for her regular training session. She warmed up on the treadmill and did a few stretches. As we were getting ready to do a set of deadlifts, she turned to me with this look on her face and said, Obasi I don’t feel like working out, but I know I have to. I’d heard those words in the gym many times before, but for some reason on that day it really hit me. I thought to myself, That’s it! Most people don’t really like working out, as a matter of fact, some of them hate it. They do it because they’re tired of being overweight. They’re tired of their clothes fitting too tight. They’re tired of getting out of breath after climbing a flight of stairs. They’re tired of not being able to keep up with their kids or grandchildren. They’re tired of taking medication. Yes, there are some people who love lifting weights and doing cardio, but most people work out because they want results, even if they don’t enjoy the process. At the end of the day, we work out because deep down we know we have to!

Let’s be honest. If there was a pill we could take to lose weight for good, without doing any exercise, most people would buy it. If there was some magical way we could get the body we want without putting in the work, we’d jump at the opportunity. But, we all know it doesn’t
