    Introduction

    Purpose

This book presents a Leadership Practice course. This Introduction is addressed to teachers and Chapters One to Five are written to address learners.

This course will introduce learners to key leadership concepts but the focus is on real-world cases of leadership using values-based leadership.

By the end of this course learners should be able to:

    1. Develop an understanding of leadership history and key emerging perspectives.

    2. Critically analyse some approaches to leadership, especially values-based process-oriented approaches to leadership.

    3. Assess how diversity impacts on leadership processes and outcomes.

    4. Apply personal development tools and techniques to own self-development as leaders.

    Structure

The course consists of five classes of 1-2 hours duration designed using a simple universal story structure:

    1. Once upon a time … The Everyday World of Leadership

    2. Something happened … Crisis of Leadership

    3. And then … The Internet

    4. And then … Diversity

    5. Until finally … We Step Up

In Chapter One, 'The Everyday World of Leadership' we look at how leadership is commonly discussed in practice, popular literature and the academic literature. These three ways of understanding leadership help us understand some ways that leadership is defined, contested as a concept, and some of the critical issues that we face when studying and practicing leadership. On a personal level learners are asked to identify their long-term goals and are introduced to two complementary techniques for keeping focused on long-term goals while helping them be better at getting the right tasks done the right way.

In Chapter Two, 'Something Happened ...The Crisis of Leadership', we look at the rise of authoritarian leadership. We also look at shared leadership models and servant leadership. We develop our critical thinking skills by discussing real-life cases. On a personal level learners locate themselves as leaders, and as potential leaders, by starting to define where they are and where they want to go in their own leadership journeys.

In Chapter Three, 'And Then ... The Internet' we look at emergent leadership and other forms of leadership facilitated by social media and digitalisation. We look more closely at values-based leadership, and leader-less leadership. On a personal level we focus on developing self-awareness
