    Chapter 1 Traffic Incident

It is not raining in the one city where very few people even own an umbrella, no less use it. But a few people will carry one in January; where it may rain 33-days straight. During this time, even the ducks wear boots. Lastly, no matter how much it rains there will never be a mud puddle for the kids to play in several hours later.

It is nearing 05:30 hours on a Monday for a Seattle Patrolman and an ex-Seal patrolling West Seattle. The bars closed three hours ago, and that business has been wrapped up.

The weather has been unusually nice. In Seattle that means very little rain for the last three days.

In the past as a rookie Patrolman of only one year directing traffic, Jones assisted in stopping an attempted shooting of fellow officers. As a fifth-year patrolman, he was also the first officer at the scene of a homicide/home invasion and a very convoluted case. He secured the scene, preserved some valuable evidence, and assisted in the investigation.

Patrolman Samuel Jones is in his early 30’s, six-feet two inches, a rock if you were ever to bounce into him. He is bright and a quick study. He wanted to get into the Seattle SWAT unit, but it was full and had a waiting list. The smaller cities around Seattle either had no SWAT unit or they did but their pay was poor. He decided he would pay his dues while being a Patrolman in Seattle. The ladies say he is a fine looker in his uniform. He never talks about his service on a Navy Seal team because it was all classified. The SWAT leader wanted him, but the list is the list.

He is one of a very few single patrol cars, most have two Patrolmen in each patrol car. He has assisted the Strong team on several cases. Patrolman Jones has been on the police force over six years. During that time, he has proven himself to be decisive, hardworking and one of the few officers who shoots as well as Detective Rage. He and Detective Rage have a standing ‘shooting’ date ever Saturday.

The traffic is light as Patrolman Jones rounds a curve on a four-lane road. The curve is a one-mile downward sloping road. If it ever snows, this is the first road closed. He is continuing back to the station, after pulling an extra part of a shift. He sees a car has stopped or going very slow in his lane of traffic as he rounds the turn, about one block ahead. The car's lights are on and the exhaust says it is running. There is no car behind his patrol car and he slows down. However, he can now see that the car is not moving, its headlights are on, but its brake lights are not on.

He thinks, ‘some problem that just happened?’

He pulls up behind the stopped car with the standard distance between their cars. His 10 by 10 eyesight has the license plate to dispatch. Jones flips his flashing lights on.

They report, No wants or warrants.

He grabs his hat, flash light, opens his door and gets out.

He approaches the car with his flashlight on. He shines the light through the back window. He sees a long blond head of hair bent over the steering wheel. He supposes nothing but notices that the two windows he can see are down about an inch. Also, the lock stems on all four doors are down. There is nothing more to see in the car. He comes up to the driver's side window and taps it with his flash light. The woman does not move, and he can see the car is in park with the hand break set.

Jones walks behind the car and comes up to the rear passenger's window. His weighted baton shatters the window with one blow.

The woman has still not moved. Reaching through the broken window he unlocks the back door and then the lock stem on the front passenger's door. He opens the passenger’s door and unlocks all the doors. He reaches in from the passenger’s side and turns the engine off. He closes the door, walks around the back of the car, and returns to the driver's door. He looks at his watch and it is 05:34 hours.

He opens the driver's door. She still does not move. He does not have to look twice to know she is dead. He is all too familiar with that. She is still slumped over the steering when he carefully closes the
