      Dr. Brendan Sweetman (PhD, University of Southern California, 1992) is professor of philosophy at Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Missouri. He is the author of more than one hundred articles, and author or editor of twelve books, including Religion and Science: An Introduction (2010), and Religion: Key Concepts in Philosophy (2007).

      This article introduces some of the key questions studied by moral philosophers and discusses various approaches to those questions, including the difference between objectivism and relativism, and various ethical theories that raise important moral concepts, such as human nature, virtue, duty and obligation, and the relationship between God and morality. Ethical approaches concerned with the overall good and with the promotion of moral rights are also considered. This article presents some general ideas concerning moral philosophy and ethics, and refers the reader to the work of individual philosophers or specific topics for more detail.

      Some of the most important questions of human existence concern morality: how human beings ought to live morally; what is the difference between right and wrong; what moral rights do human beings have; how should we treat our fellow human beings, or as the ancient Greek philosophers put it, what is the good life? As a result, philosophers have given a great deal of attention to these questions and have subjected all aspects of morality to detailed analysis—from offering theories based on general principles
